A Moment of Stunned Silence

furkidsforme's picture

Over dinner tonight, DH and I were discussing SS17 going off to college, and my concerns that basically he will piss away our money because he is not mature enough for college. Then... the unthinkable happened.

1- DH agreed that SS17 likely WILL have trouble with college, but he feels he needs to let him try.
2- DH saw my point that having a child raised with never being held accountable will likely be set up for failure when tasked with something as huge as independent life on campus.

And #3- DH said one of the reasons he really wanted to let SS17 (normally referred to a "The Prince) go off to college was because HE WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING HIM OUT OF THE HOUSE.

Is it the second coming? Have seas parted??????

Is your DH willing to start holding his son accountable now? He has a little bit of time to try and make him become more responsible.

^^this. If the two of you can work out a few areas that he needs to focus on that might help his transition then maybe he will stay out of the house a bit longer...

I'm happy to hear him say the words, but on the other hand, it also seems kind of cruel to the Skid. This Skid has never been held accountable for ANYTHING, and now suddenly it's "go to school and pass or else we won't pay". DH also wants to have SS agree to pay back any tuition if he fails. That is sort of a zero-60 in accountability for a kid who has no idea of how to be accountable!

I actually feel a little sorry for the kid. He's going to fall on his face.

I 100% agree that kids need accountability. But to say to a kid- "We will take out this $50,000 loan for you and if you fail, then YOU pay it back" is a little unfair to a kid who has never even been accountable for tying his shoes or feeding himself.

It's like DH raised him with no life skills, and then is throwing him to the wolves with HUGE consequences. The kid is set up to fail, and hard.

I'm all for life lessons, but DAMN, this is one harsh and expensive life lesson being thrown on a kid who we have no reason to think can handle it.
