Update - Ingrown Toenail

BettyRay's picture

The skids got back to BM’s Sunday night.

Monday morning - BM took SS17 to a walk-in clinic and was prescribed an antibiotic.

Monday noon - DH got a call from BM telling him the way he had treated SS17’s toe was totally wrong. (DH had SS17 soak his foot twice a day in hot water, and then poured peroxide over it. In the mornings DH would put Neosporin on it and bandage it; in the evenings DH had SS17 prop his foot up and let the air on it until bedtime; then DH would apply the Neosporin and bandage.)

Tuesday evening – BM e-mails DH a picture of SS17’s toe – it looked worse than when we first started treating it on own trip. BM tells DH she’s making a Dr. Appt. for Wednesday and that he better take off work.

Yesterday morning – SS17 is prescribed the high power antibiotics.

Yesterday afternoon – BM shows her doctor the picture of SS17's toe. BM's GP says SS17 needs the toenail removed.

Yesterday late afternoon - SS17 had his toenail removed. He’s on high-powered antibiotics and will have to soak his toe twice a day.

BTW – Since SS17 had e-mailed pictures of the toe to BM every day and BM being the MOTY that she is, BM showed the series to her doctor thinking the doctor would tell her that the way DH treated SS17's toe was wrong. Well the doctor told BM that whatever treatment DH did that first week was good and that if it would have been continued SS17 probably would have needed surgery. Smile

So sick of the drama. I told DH from the beginning to take SS17 to a podiatrist, DH didn’t listen. But then what do I know I’m just a stepmom. I’m sure SS17 went back to BM’s and stopped soaking his foot and then skipped taking the meds cause although BM is all about the medical drama she’s not very good at follow through especially with medical treatment.

And why-oh-why has no one told SS17 he alone is to blame for this because his habit of biting and ripping his toenails to the quick is what caused this mess in the first place is beyond me. When I told SS17 how dangerous that was and how he could have contracted blood poisoning from the open wound and died – DH poo-pooed me for hurting SS17’s fee-fees.

LOL. Good stuff!

I got an infection on my big toe after a pedicure where the lady YANKED a hangnail - and everything connected to it - off of my foot. My toe blew up over the next few days and when I went into the doctor he said it was good that I came in when i did. He gave me the high power antibiotics (that would literally put me to sleep) and all was better.

BM is an idiot.

Why does dad have to take the day off?

SS is almost of age.

Drama, drama, drama.

It's not like he's going to be admitted to hospital for major surgery.

BM wanted DH to go to the appt. too.

DH didn't take-off work, he ignored BM.

Make sure it isn't pasturella. My son had it on in his pinky when he was little.

Biting his tonenails?? WTH??? At first I wondered why you H was treating the foot of a 17 who should be fully capable of applying his own neosporin and bandaid, but nevermind. He clearly is in need of help with the basics.

This is way too much drama over something that could have been prevented. I don't know how you stand it. You must roll your eyes nonstop while you are at home.

Yes, at 17 he bites his fingernails and toenails

I just try to keep my mouth shut. I've got my iPod and when the skids are with us I keep myself busy.

I commented to DH that I think it's odd that a 17 year old is unable to be trusted treating his own wound. DH agreed with me and then said he's taking care of SS17's wound while he's with us cause he doesn't trust SS17 to do it.... :jawdrop:

Yes, because he knows his dad will do it for him. His son is never going to learn to be responsible. Does he not see the flaw in his logic?

BettyRay's picture

DH has a blind spot - he understands that what he's doing is making the skids immature and irresponsible but he doesn't want to pull back and let the skids deal with things on their own.

>>Does he just whip his shoes and socks off in front of the TV and start gnawing away?<<

No, not when DH and I are around. But I know he has done it in the living room because I've had toenails and fingernails fly out at me when I've adjusted the sofa slipcover. He was stuffing them betwen the cushions  That stopped when I asked at the dinner table one night in as sweet voice, "Who ever is stuffing their fingernails between the sofa cushions please stop - FYI there's a slipcover on the sofa and I don't appreciate the nails flying at me when I'm straightening it." DH and SS12 looked at me in shock, SS17 looked at his plate and turned beet-red. It hasn't happened since Wink

SS17 has never had a girlfriend - I don't think he's discovered girls yet due to the fact that he doesn't wear deodorant or comb his hair unless DH reminds him too.

I was thinking the same thing...he BITES his toenails?? OMG!! I guess you can look on the good side, he can still get his toe to his mouth, more than I could do!! Smile

Ya he gets points for flexibility but points get deducted for actually putting said toe in said mouth. LOLOL

Did I read this right? He bites his toenails???? OMG I am going to barf. Who does this????

BettyRay's picture

I would say someone who developed a disgusting habit as a small child and his parents never discouraged the behavior. But then what do I know?

DaizyDuke's picture

OMG! My BS4 hates you even touching his toenails....I can't imagine him putting them in his mouth!!!! Where would a kid even learn this? That is a bit MORE scary!!!!!!!

BettyRay's picture

I don't know where SS17 learned it but my theory is that when he was little BM and DH didn't clip his toenails regularly and they got too long so SS17 started biting them off.

Again this is just theory due to the fact that when I met DH SS12 was 3 and one of the first things I noticed about him was that his fingernails were way too long. I asked DH to clip them and DH was even surprised at how long they were.

sad that I have just read that your DH has had to apply neo and a bandage every night to his almost adult sons toe.

the real world is gonna eat these little kids up...
