Bad Attitude Ruins Christmas

andipmadison's picture

My parents and grandmother make a big effort to make sure that the boys get spoiled at Christmas despite them living 10 hours away. The 10 year old didn't even want to speak to my mother to thank her for the Christmas gifts and spoke to her with a disappointed tone. You would think I was trying to feed him a sandwich with a bug in it by asking him to say thank you.

This has really bumbed me out. I know I married into all the craziness. I just did not expect disrespect to my parents.

I really wish my step-kids knew the value of Christmas. They are being brought-up in a godless environment in a very religious state, Utah. No, our family is not Mormon. I believe in god and my husband does not. My husbands ex-wife is Mormon when she needs something and is a habitual liar. No really. She can't put 2 sentences together before it becomes ridiculous. The kids have these tendencies and it is really frustrating to talk to them. They do the typical open up the card, shake the money out and move on without reading who bothered to think of them during Christmas. I guess that is typical of being a kid but I just had a meltdown about what my step kid just did to my mom.

Granted, my husband doesn't foster loving Christ but he does foster moral values. When my kid spoke to my mother like it was a huge imposition. Just pissed me off. Where is the Christmas spirit? Where is the thankfulness? Where is the remote sense of humility? I can't help but think it is the way that they are being brought-up. Entitled ungrateful liars who frequently stink! I have to share my life with my love bugs and get no recognition and very little respect. It just hurts that it is now extended to my parents.

I agree. It has everything to do with parenting. The kids get such mixed signals. It would be nice if they had a positive direction from both parents.

Thank you. I think I will advise my side of the family to refrain from gifts. However, my mother can't help herself. She loves them even though they are not "blood" and I did make an excuse for my SS. I know I shouldn't have but I was so embarrassed.

Maybe let your mother know that the boys have' so much' that a token gift i all that is necessary. Like a pkt of their favourite socks. Or she can donate to a charity they like... read: Whoever their fav sports celebrity is and the charity they support.

Great idea! I certainly will. Your suggestion has made me feel better. I certainly will pass it along. Merry Christmas. I am so glad I decided to look for a site in which would let me vent. It is a bonus that folks on the site have constructive suggestions and ideas. Thank you!

My skids have done this with my parents, unfortunately. I have four skids and one bio daughter, and my parents used to be generous with them -- but the brats could not appreciate or be thankful, or even say thank you -- so my parents no longer get them gifts. Skids' loss.

I'm so sorry this happened to you also. Sad
