Okay, so here is my latest gripe, and while I'm venting, I really want some feedback as to how to handle this situation.

Firstly, I'm now 6 months pregnant. I eat a lot more than normal, and I try to keep certain foods around that I enjoy. For example, I like Fruit Loops. However, it seems like skids HAVE NO IDEA on how to eat things without eating the whole thing. I've tried talking to them about it. I've tried getting mad at them over it, it seems like nothing I do works. SO tells me to just put my stuff in the room, but I don't feel that I should have to hoard food in my room. What pisses me off is that SO is a health nut, so he does not buy junk food. Hardly ever. Anything the boys have in regards to snacks is because of me. I always try to have the stuff they like, but it's challenging because they will eat the whole damn thing in a day.

Case in point: This weekend on Sunday, I got the box of Fruit Loops for me, got Rice Krispies and Frosted Flakes for skids. I dragged SO with me to Rite Aid, and SO also bought Honey Bunches of Oats since there was a special, since he considers that to be a healthier version of cereal. I told the kids, have your stuff, but make sure you don't eat too much of my stuff, 1 small bowl a day is max. Especially since I had also got them on that day applesauce cups and vanilla yogurt. I have told them before to eat 1-2 snacks max a day so that they don't finish their food so quickly.

Of course when I got home last night after doing my 12.5 hour shift, I started the laundry, checked on kids, got ready for bed. At about 11pm, I start wanting cereal. I get up to find....the Fruit Loops box is there...with about 1 bowl of cereal left in it. The applesauce (6 of them) were down to 2 and the yogurt was down a cup. Don't know why in the world they need to eat so much. I should have probably been glad they at least left me a bowl, but I was livid.

I decided today to give them a taste of their own medicine. I had bought them 2 gallons of juices they like. Well, I threw the juice all away, except for the tiniest bit and left it in the box. I did the same with the milk. I made sure I cooked dinner, but no more will I buy juice or snacks for them. Whatever snack I will buy myself will be left at work in my locker and I'm hoping this teaches them. I want to get them to the point where they don't feel like they have to finish all the snacks in the house in a day.

If you guys read the backstory, you'll know that SO works the evening shift so when I get home from work sometimes and SO didn't cook, I'll usually get skids Chinese or order out because I'm too tired to cook a meal at night. Sometimes they don't like what he cooks so they will wait for me to come home to ask me to order out for them. I usually do. This time, I'm thinking of just leaving them with the bare bones so that they understand my role in this apartment a little better. SO will leave them with salads for lunch or dinner and there is usually some kind of canned food/pre packaged food they can heat up so it's not like they are going to go hungry. I just want them to learn not to piss me off. Especially now that i'm pregnant. I've been stewing about this since this morning. Lack of effing consideration!

I just want to be able to have stuff around without having to feel like a Nazi or like I'm rationing food to them. I want them to learn self control! I think I might be reduced to hiding food in the room if this one doesn't work out.

Yeah, I think I might be done. The I feel sorry for them bone can't work when they are not considerate of me.

I used to rush to the store to get treats for skids, now SD, so they had something to eat bc I work 12 hour shifts myself.

I then noticed the food budget was overboard and I was throwing a lot of food away bc they would leave containers or boxes of cereal open and it went to waste, and this school year, SD is only home a day a week. I only go twice a month, with a few small trips between. There is always something quick and easy for her to eat after school until dinner.....make it yourself mac n cheese or spaghettios, sandwiches.

I hide all our special food and lunch stuff in our room.

Get a Sharpie and buy two of everything. Your name on one box, Skids on the other. It probably won't work for long, so you'd be better off putting your food in your room. DH and I do that when SD19 is home from college. She will binge on food in one night. We were blaming it on SD13 but found out we were wrong.

I am so glad you put this post up! Just minutes ago, I was telling SD13 that she needs to recycle her items in the kitchen. In the past few days I have found 2 containers for Oreo cookies with NO cookies in them, back in the pantry. I have also found the paper packaging for 4-packs of fruit cups in the pantry. Three and four packagings at a time. I told SD13 it is paper and needs to be recycled. I also told her to not leave empty frozen pizza boxes in the freezer! I knew she had to take the box OUT of the freezer to look at cooking time and temp, but then she goes and puts the empty box back in the freezer!

As I am mentioning the FROZEN pizza boxes, she says, "Oh...." and reaches into the fridge, not the freezer. She pulls out the Dominos box from yesterday when I ordered pizza for the electricians that were at my house working. I was going to have the two slices left for dinner tonight since DH has left town on business and I will not be cooking for SD13. I was about to tell SD3 that there was pizza in the Dominos box and I was going to have it for dinner.

She starts shaking the box and there's nothing in it!! From the fridge!!!!!

She ate my fricking leftovers! I know it's fair game if you don't hide your food, but I figured I was safe because this pizza was NOT plain. All she will eat is plain pizza. I humiliated the shit out of her and told her she can have leftovers that DH specifically told her to eat while he was out of town. Why the f~ck was she eating pizza with toppings? (OK she prob took them off or had a come to Jesus moment with the pepperoni, idk....).

I told her that was IT. Any more trash and recyclables that she leaves around the kitchen? I am going to put them in her f~cking bed! I told her I was sick of cleaning up after her and seeing her trash in the kitchen. The empty boxes is a new thing, I put three on her chair at the kitchen table this weekend, but I will go the extra mile to see that they travel via SM up to her room.

Thanks for the great subject matter. I have calmed down some, enough that I won't call Dominos to order myself MY OWN pizza as a replacement for tonight. LOL!

Damn Skids. Get a mini-fridge if you need to, but take your stuff to your room. It's the only way. Esp since your pregnant. Good on you to not buy them snacks anymore. SD13 has even started drinking my Diet Cokes when she goes through her juice boxes in two days. I told DH she hasn't touched the milk at all. He has his head in the sand.

Congrats on the pregnancy btw. Hang in there!

Moon, I wish I could put the garbage stuff in their beds, but they will just shove it over to the side and leave it on the floor.

They are kids, they are not going to learn self control on this matter.
Seriously this stuff happens all the times every where, and the adults have figured out the best solution is to just put your own snacks in your bedroom.
no, you shouldnt "have" to, but to not do it, is just driving yourself crazy.

I disagree. They CAN learn self control if they are taught it.

We have chocolate in the fridge, cans of coke in the pantry (OH takes one can to work every day - he's a skinny beanpole and never gains weight) freddo frogs in the pantry, other fruit snacks, packets of crisps (mini packs), cheese and crackers packs, individual yoghurts in the fridge etc.

My kids know they don't help themselves - yes they have in the past, but when caught they get consequences, and there isn't enough for school lunches and dance snacks - nothing worse than missing out on the few "treats" they get in the lunchbox a few times to make them realise that sneak-eating isn't clever.

The skids on the other hand help themselves to everything because daddy-dearest never tells them off for it. We just had them for 10 days straight including a full school week. After they left went to SD14's room - 2 of OH's coke cans under the bed - sure enough check the box and the little sneak has taken them from the back of the box. I hid the chocolate/chips/anything they would want - the fruit and yoghurt were safe LOL

Once they left the chips, OH's "up'n'go's" that he has on the way to work at 4.30am mysteriously reappeared in the cupboard... Before the skids came we asked what they eat for breakfast. in their lunchboxes etc. Breakfast went SS10 - an up'n'go. SD14 - a glass of juice. Lunchbox? Buttered white bread roll, no toppings, packets of chips, chocolate bars, cheese and crackers, other sugary "bars", packets of biscuits etc. OH broke his collar bone on 1st September and has been off work til today so no overtime - which means $3-400 less per week coming in... I told them all in no uncertain terms I will not be buying the majority of that crap - it's all junk, no goodness and too expensive. We came up with toast or fruit toast for breakfast (mine have fruit toast one day porridge the next), the bread rolls, cheese and crackers, fruit and yoghurt, and a freddo frog - mine have cheese and crackers, carrot sticks instead of the bread rolls. With chips and banana bread or a muffin as an after school snack (mine have this because they dance every night and need to energy)

I hate having to hide food, and I know OH removed the rubbish from sd14's room - the stolen cans as well as the detritus from BM's "care package" - cracker boxes, chip packets, lolly bags, chocolate wrappers etc - because they were all over the floor Sunday night - gone Monday night.... And nothing will be said the the little piggy wig and so it will continue. She said to dd12 over the weekend "I need to start working on getting skinny for summer!" dd12 just looked at her like she was nuts. Girl has NEVER been skinny LMAO and we all know the way she eats - its never going to happen.

When I saw the two empty Oreo containers this weekend, I promptly took the new package that DH bought at the store.

It is currently unopened and IN MY ROOM. Bwahahahahhaaa! }:)

WTF...REALLY's picture

Never ever mess with a pregnant woman and her fruit loops!!!! LOL

Just make a rule that ALL Fruit Loops are off limits - period! Growing a kid here - need my snack! Better not mess with me! Smile

SMto3's picture

The funny thing is that the stuff I want comes in phases. So I wanted the Froot Loops this weekend, today it was pizza with extra cheese, tomorrow Pop Tarts. It's so strange! Things I haven't eaten in literally years. The thought made me laugh though, a pregnant woman and her Froot Loops.

I told DH this past weekend to NOT buy any cereal for SD13. There are SEVEN boxes in the pantry. I checked a few yesterday and the bag isn't even rolled down. SD13 has complained before about the cereal being stale. Well.......????? I told DH not to buy anymore until what we had was gone.

Also, SD13s bed is a loft bed. Any trash I put up there in the future will not be seen until she crawls over it in the dark to go to bed. Chef Boyardee made an appearance under her pillow this past summer after I found him under the basement bathroom sink! }:)
