OT- Which is more beneficial- private school for early education, or for high school?

PeanutandSons's picture

Starting to think about schooling options for my bioson(s). I am trying to figure out it private school is something that I can swing.

It's going to be a huge stretch for me financially. I will be paying for this on my own, more than likely. So my question is.... Do you think I would be helping my boys more by investing in their early education (pre-k- grade 4) and seeing how long I can keep it up. Or saving now so that I can afford to send them to a private high school later on?

I am sort of thinking that getting a solid foundation in elementary school would be better?

I believe that the first few years sets a precedent. My son did Montessori for Pre-School. So when he started Kindergarten at the catholic school he was one of two in the class that were reading at all. By third grade he was reading at a HS level. I pulled him from Catholic school in 5th and then moved to a better school district. He is a Jr. now and all A's in AP classes. I firmly believe that the montessori helped and the smaller class rooms at private school for his early years.

He definitely doesn't get this from me. What he did get from me is that since he was so smart bad grades were never acceptable. Also, set a precedent to do homework as soon as you walk in the door. He still does that.

Ah! Something I'm very familiar with. I would say if you have the means to it, elementary private school is the BEST (and will probably be what I'll do for my kids when I have them.) Both my sister and I went to a catholic school (despite being asian and well, not catholic) from kindergarten to 5th grade, then to public school. Nuns were STRICT, but the education was GOOD.

Add that together and you have children who were all around really well behaved--especially, and unfortunately this is not to knock anyone who chooses to send their kids to public school, being surrounded by kids with parents who had enough money to send them to early private school meant that these kids came from relatively good backgrounds with parents that viewed education and behavior important. So we never emulated bad behavior because there was none to emulate, and if there were, it was dealt with swiftly and quietly.

Until we were at the age, (5th grade) where our personalities and behavior and habits were relatively stable, did they send us to public junior high. Um, it was like a JUNGLE the first few months we got used to it. I still remember being horrified at people who cursed (although now I'm quite the sailor myself) or treated others rudely.

Now, the myth that private school girls and boys, once they reach puberty go wild--yep, pretty much (from keeping in touch with my elementary school friends) much more than my public school peers, probably from being so well behaved for so long.

Entering 6th grade, we took the city wide tests for math and english--I was the only student who got the full score on the english portion, and a few points below full score on the math portion, in the 98th percentile. Tests thereafter were usually similar.

From what my parents said, the teachers and school organization was very involved in also teaching parents how to parent--like letting them know when to stop helping us with our homework, how to help us, how to recognize sexual abuse, etc.

So. That's just my two cents on this. I advocate early private school for the sheer discipline and education of it.

Those are all my reasons for wanting this for my kids. I don't want all the negative influences around them that young. They get enough of that at home from the stepsiblings.

Dh was completely against private school for SS when we (eh-hem, or should I say I) were looking into preschools. So I dropped it and found the best public elementary I could and I went through a long process to opt out of our neighborhood school and get special permission for him attend the good school. Did the same for SD a year later. Well, their A- ranked school is now a C++ ranked school 4 years later. I am NOT sending bioson there.

I found a really nice montessouri school near my job, who will actually take him starting next fall at 3 yrs old (but not baby brother) and the tuition is 650 a month. Can't really afford that, but I am looking into scholarships. And if I started down this path, is like to keep it up atleast through elementary school (although this particular school only goes thru kindergarten).

Jsmom's picture

650 would have been aweswome for Montessori, I paid 1100 a month 13 years ago...Let's put it this way, no new cars for awhile...His tuition at Catholic School was half that...

I believe that it is good for children to be enrolled to private schools while they are still in early education. By these they can be mold into a better student and can be good in essay writing.

Well according private schools are best for early education because they give more attention to students. They have very specialized ways to spread quality education. They provide reliable and sensible information to the students. They make the base of the child which helps the student throughout his or her educational career.

I agree with the comments above, private early education is really the best. I went to a private quaker school from grades k-5, then public school the rest of the way. I was worlds ahead of the public school students, and because of this, continued through to honors classes up until high school. Private school education is really top-notch and you are absolutely building the best foundation possible.

One thing to keep in mind (someone had mentioned already), the transition into public school is tough. It is definitely a jungle...A real eye opener to me when I entered the 6th grade! Keep that in mind. If you have a sensitive child, it could be very difficult!

Strengthh's picture

I'm sure you would do this with any school, private schools like all schools vary tremendously in quality. Some are excellent, some are substandard.

Ruby55's picture

It may be hard to transition to public school after being in private. I went to private grade school and not a single student went on to public HS. There are merit scholarships though.....

Another option you could consider, is moving to the neighborhood that has the best public schools.

If paying for private school is just too expensive.

I'm a developmental psych major and can tell you that, without a doubt, the research shows that a solid foundation in education during the preschool years has much much more impact on your life than what happens in grade school, high school and college. There is no contest.

One of my professors used to say that nursery/preschool/daycare teachers should be getting paid well and have tenure while college professors should be getting paid minimum wage. Not because they don't all work hard but because the overall impact on the pupil's life is so so much greater early on. Teachers in early life shape the person you will become in a way high school teachers never can.

Most of us cannot afford private education for the entire time, I agree with the other posters. When funds are limited, go with private education for the foundation then public for High School. (Having said that, I did a combo of private-public-private for my son because the few years he was in public school set him back and the last two years of high school he went to private and it worked). I feel it also depends on the child. Some kids are more self disciplined and can focus better. For the kids who need "guidance" aka rules and stricter discipline, then private schools are definitely better, IMHO.

I always prefer private schools...As i have seen high schools are becoming like shop only where classes and attendance doesn`t matter, just you have to pay fees timely..But in private schools education and other curricular activities means a lot..They focus on each and every aspect related to your child`s future betterment.

I would say that the best bet is investing your time on working with them while they are young to establish a foundation of performance and a joy for learning then in the future when you are more financially able you can invest in private school.

Sending your boys to Kindergarden already reading, knowing their numbers, etc.... and working with them personally to accomplish these goals is far more valuable than a private elementary education.

IMHO of course.

Depends on your area. Here, the best public school districts are FAR better than the private schools. My SS went to private school for 7, 8 and 9, and had to repeat 9th when he moved into the best public district in our area.
