OT / Love this time of year

secret's picture

I love this time of year. I'm clearing out my garden, finishing up drying all the herbs, bulbs... preserving all the fruit/veggies I'm collecting... planting all the stuff for the spring like onions and garlic...

I love going around to farmers markets for their last minute stuff... last couple years I got 3 crates of roma tomatoes for 10$!

The house constantly smells like something is cooking... I've got a 5 day weekend coming up, and I usually take full advantage of this time to get all my pickling and canning done if I haven't gotten it done earlier in the year due to weather...

I went through all the winter stuff already to figure out whether I needed to make anything, and I've got to make some replacement hats/scarves/mitts for the kids... dh went and told his supervisor that I made him some wool socks just like his mom used to make... and his supervisor asked if I'd make some too... sill dh went and said sure no problem... (ugh) but he also mentioned he wasn't sure how much I'd charge, maybe he could talk me down to 20$ a pair and his sup said no problem, a dozen pairs should be good! HA!

(Seriously... they go for like 35-45$ online.)

This is also the time of year where I prepare bulk crockpot meals... I set everything up in freezer bags ready to go, all that needs to be added is the water, pretty much... I also make batches of mixes for Sidekicks type meals, hamburger helper type meals... to get those ready, all that really needs to be done is for the water/butter to be added to the mix.

I tend to go through the pantry too, pull out the more `summery`type foods so I can use them up to make space... and make a list of all the staples for the more cold weather meals we tend to have... we have more things like stews and casseroles so I stock up on different types of products that during the warmer months.

I also love the smell... there's no smell quite like fall.

every one is capable of doing things like this... simply start with small herb garden.... and some seasonal flowers..

once you have the hang of that you will not be able to stop and it's very relaxing to scratch around in the earth and see your handy work grow

Secret I so agree that there is no smell quite like fall. I love all the seasons. And fall is by far my favorite. I bet your home smells wonderful with the crock pot meals. I am looking forward to making christmas cookies this year. I love the way the home smells with cookies in the oven. I would like to add that you are the most organized person on this site. Your blogs are always helpful and I love your ideas.

you're prolly the only one that would ever say that. lol

Christmas cookies is the one thing I don't enjoy making. They get eaten too dang fast... spend time decorating them...and chomp. No thank you lol

I do cookies year round. But Christmas cookies are the best. I am hoping I get a few new recipes on this site this year.

Oh I make cookies too....

I don't do those. Wayyyyyy too time consuming. If I make sugar cookies, or shortbread cookies, the kids can decorate them to their hearts' content... I don't touch them.

I usually just make gingersnaps, snickerdoodles, PB cookies, chocolate chip or butterscotch chip cookies, and oatmeal... year round... special occasions I might make some Chocolate Chile cookies and Nanaimo bars.
