...a...a...rabbit!

Cover1W's picture

DH says at dinner, "Can I ask you about something, with no judgement?"

Me, hesitantly and instantly with judgement, "Uh-huh..."

DH, "I've been wondering if we should get a rabbit for 'the girls.' It would be a good birthday gift for SD11." (who turns 11 next week)

Me, instantly thinking he means "the girls" = SD11 and her TF (troublesome friend)!

Me, "No. No way. Uh-uh, no."

DH, "But why?"

Me, "Have you ever owned a rabbit? I have when I was a kid..." And I go on to explain and ask him pointed questions about the care and keeping of a rabbit. "And I AM NOT going to take care of a rabbit on top of everything else."

DH finally says ok, you are right I didn't think it through.

So it's settled.

At grocery store last night I run into TF's father.
TFF: "Hey! How you doing!"
blah, blah, blah
TFF: "You know, I have a proposition..." Goes on to say how it would be GREAT if we got a rabbit for the girls. Because their neighbor has rabbits and the girls love them!
Me, "Yeah, I discussed this with DH and No, no rabbit."
TFF: "Oh, don't always say no, say yes sometimes!"
Me, "Hey, you know who will end up taking care of it? Me. And I'm not doing it, no. No. No."
TFF: "Well, that's too bad. Maybe we'll do it when we move into a better location."
end of that convo.

GOOD LORD.
I was really irked. Still am. Who is he to ask US to get a rabbit? If it comes up again, I'm going to say, well, SD11 is with us 50%. When she's gone, are you going to bring TF over 2x a day to take care of rabbit when she is not with us? What about when we are on vacation? Who is going to pay for rabbit? Etc., etc. Effing A. I wouldn't agree with that anyway. I don't trust TF at all, let alone her being in the house with little to no supervision (betting TFF would stay in car, he's a permissive birth father).

Absolulety, you will be the one taking care of them. DH got the kids hamsters a few years ago. Until just two weeks ago we only had the kids every other weekend. Guess who takes care of the dang things. Not DH.

Oh FFS, such idiocy. So many bunnies, chicks and baby ducks are purchased around Easter/Spring time, and many of them end up abused, neglected, or dead. Poor, poor things.

TF's dad sounds like a real loser. Apple, meet tree.

What a bunch of nerve. Acting like you are the grinch because you won't get HIS kid a live animal? "Don't always say no" -- what loaded, insulting, blaming, entitled, presumptuous language.

BTW, SD17 got rabbits beginning of this school year. BM lasted 2 weeks before she forced the girl to rehome them. The first weekend SD left them with her mother while at our house for regular custody time, she and dh returned to find the animals water bottles completely empty. BM had not cared for them one bit while SD was at our house.

So BM never lifted a single finger for these animals and still evicted them after 2 weeks. And these animals were required for SD17's biology class! Which she flunked anyway cuz that's how sd rolls.

But, geez, the nerve of that man!

"Why does your CH still let SD hang out with TF..."

You have to ask this?
:?

Um, Disney Dad cannot say "no" to his daughter.

I do NOTHING when TF is involved. I don't drive, don't cook, don't clean up and don't really interact with her at all. I try to watch them like a hawk (read: my latest broken pantry door which I am 99% sure was SD11 and TF messing around) if I am home.

The two kids are on best behavior when I'm around because they know I mean it if I have to tell them to knock off whatever they are doing or TF will be taken home early.

OH, I'm straight up with him.
I'm friends (since college) with his wife - she acknowledges her husband's permissiveness is an issue but SHE is just as bad. This is the one that TF threw something at and *I* had to tell TF off, rather than her own mother (the target).

We don't socialize too much with them, they've got their own schedule.

Cover, I have a confession to make. When I saw 'rabbit', I immediately thought of, well, um... the adult toy. :O

SD10 got a rabbit, named her Twix and she is the cutest thing ever. I USED to take care of her, but now just leave her the heck alone. I have gotten SO FREAKING BURNED BY THAT RABBIT! Lets see...over the course of time, the following happened:

1. The two SD's fought over who was "rabbit momma". That's right, SD17 made SD10 upset over that one. She still doesn't stop talking about it.
2. SD10 for a while was not cleaning the cage or spending any time with Twixy. SO threatened to rehome her, and I asked him not to, and said I would take on all duties, and SD10 can still play with bun bun any time. That caused SD10 to not say a word to me, then cry to BM, who angrily texted SO that he was choosing ME over his OWN CHILDREN. Boo hoo, Feck you. I had a conversation with SD10 after that. About going behind peoples back, and causing her mother to get angry with me for no reason.
3. Arguments about having bun bun on a towel inside because no one has trained her not to pee or poo. That turned nasty real quickly when SD17 argued with me, told me "just so you know I was here first", then cried to daddy when he backed me up, and told him "I cannot BELIEVE you are choosing HER over your own daughter!" He always falls for that one...plucks his heartstrings every time...

So I say ""Feck the Rabbit, and tell that A$$ of a father to Feck off". Sorry for all the cursing, bad day, bad subject...
In conclusion - It will cause arguments and you will be taking care of it, or be the bad guy when you even suggest that SD should take care of it. They will quickly lose interest and go back to their video games...

My first thought was gee, what a coincidence that you were asked by your SO and TFF's dad about getting a rabbit. Was this a topic of discussion between girls and fathers?? That kinda stuff right there pisses me off.... everyone knows what's going on or are making plans, THEN I'm informed

obviously everyone else has already discussed and is onboard with this rabbit thing. I think I'd be asking some questions about all of the back room conversations going on.

I can't even believe that conversation with TFF .....wtf....lol.

I've got 2 house rabbits. I'm kinda burnt out dumping their litter boxes everyday, but all my pets are driving me nuts since I had my baby.

Just putting it out there that if for some reason a rabbit is in your future, local animal shelters usually have quite a few and they will be spayed/neutered. Some months they even wave the adoption fee around here too.

}:) my reply to TFF..... sure we will get the rabbit and it will stay with you, in your house... then SD and your daughter can play with it there... but I will not allow any rabbits in my house...

see this way you get rid of that terrible friend.... and SD Biggrin
