I took the plunge and

AJanie's picture

Deleted Facebook.

Yes, DH and I made the huge life altering (eye-roll) decision together.

Reasons being:

-It makes us (especially me) less productive.
-It has caused tensions in the past with BM (she is a stalker, even when blocked.)
-It has caused relationship tension when exes friend request or some random stranger sends a "hey sexy, do I know you from somewhere?" message. (Although it definitely makes me feel good for a minute, lol ~SEX APPEAL, I STILL GOT IT~ Blum 3 ).
-Political posts. Enough said.
-I follow a lot of animal pages. I cannot tolerate seeing these malnourished animals or posts about dying animals. I cried in the bathroom at work the other day.
-Bragging posts. I have a "friend" from high school who very clearly hates her life so she posts incessantly about how amazing it is.
-Baby posts. I have fertility issues and it makes me sad.

The list goes on and on.

I wonder how bad I will miss it. Or if we will be strong enough to stay off of it long term. I ordered a bunch of books. I want to start reading more. Spending more time together. Connecting with actual, real life friends.

Anyone else take the plunge and get rid of it? Or never have it in the first place? Discuss......

Congrats, AJ! That really is awesome. FB isn't going anywhere so if you decide you want it back, it'll be there. I, too, find the incessant "my life is fab!" posts annoying when I know the person and know their life is anything but.

Thanks! I guess it is my way of starting fresh in the new year. This one woman's posts are unreal... flashing her huge diamond ring in every photo, half naked photos of herself every other day, it really grosses me out. I won't miss that. The pictures of cute puppies I will miss.

I will keep everyone posted. I hope to do it permanently but I know I may very well find my way back. One of my closest friends has also never been on it, it amazes me how much more privacy she has.

Thank you for the positivity! I have instagram and pinterest and I will likely keep those. My IG is private, way less "friends" and I find it far less dramatic in general. I enjoy pinterest and see nothing wrong with it.

Have never had it and am glad. It's bad enough that people I know get some peeks into my family through my sisters' FB pages.

Both of my sisters have been contacted by friends of mine, wanting to get in contact with me. My sisters tell me I should get FB. No thanks, I'm good!

DH's family will tell him, "Oh, I saw on FB that SD blah, blah, blah," or "BM blah, blah, blah." Blah, blah, blah is right, we don't care.

I will miss certain features. But I have 900 ish friends from when I was a big drama whore (I was in college when I got Facebook and my mindset was the more friends, the merrier). I would rather delete the entire thing than start deleting people and have anyone "take it personally." And as far as the eulogies for dead animals, if I unfollow the page I would miss out on the stories of the animals who weren't dead. It just seems like a hassle. Just my preference.

Sounds exactly like me , downsouth. I have on FB page but rarely on it. Relatives message my DW to ask me questions since I am never on and she might stop breathing without it.

Cool! I follow a few in my neck of the woods but never participate. I have a fear of "them" following me home. If it doesn't have any of your personal info, I would love if you would share

I went three years without Facebook and only recently rejoined because my husband wasn't telling me about my cousin's children's birthday parties. It's such a time waster.

AJanie's picture

It really is. I haven't sat down and read a good book in ages because I am usually laying in bed surfing social media before I go to sleep. I really look forward to reading again and ordered a few books last night.

My vet told me, pooping issues are due to behavioral issues. The cat is pissed at you, etc.

Peeing issues 99% of the time mean it's a health (UTI) issue.

LOL.

I have a FB friend who home schools on some tropical island and makes bikinis for a living.

Another one who is super wealthy and every photo is of his sexy arm candy girlfriend in some mini-dress at yet another exotic location. I email with him on occasion and he is completely miserable with her.

Then you have the pathetic posters who are always whining about how lonely or miserable they are.

We have the couples who fight publicly posters.

We have the ever growing "TEAM BEACHBODY" or "LULA ROE" or "RODAN and FIELDS" sales people who cannot wait for you to JOIN THEIR TEAM!

It is all bullshit and I do not understand why I let it take up so much of my time.

AJanie's picture

I hate to offend anyone but I think LulaRoe sells a lot of tacky stuff. I guess some of it can be okay. I rarely wear leggings though.

Never had it...was just never that interested.

I keep in touch with friends the old fashioned ways Smile .

I am not on FB, never have been. I have a "pseudo" account that I needed for work purposes, but nothing out there with my real name or info.

I have a very fulfilling life and don't miss being part of all this drama that revolves around social media. I must caveat that by admitting I am "older." I prefer my friendships the old-school way, by calling and texting/emailing individuals. There is nothing that beats the one-on-one communication method, IMO.

uofarkchick's picture

I must be really old... I remember when the old school ways of communicating with friends was by talking in the hall, writing notes, and calling them. Email wasn't a big thing until I was in middle school.

get rid of FB - oh hell no never......

I use it to keep in touch with my 'us girls and my European girls and some family I do not want to see IRL Wink

I drifted away from Facebook a number of years ago. I post on my business page perhaps once a year. My personal page? Golly, it's been at least 4 years. I still get email notifications of friends posts and I may/may not check them out.

DownSouth ... I'm one of those who obviously does not manage my privacy settings well, since one of the things I resent about Facebook is how it shows up on someone else's computer that I am online/signed on 6 hours ago, whatever. I log in/log out every time but obviously, I'm missing something.

I manage friends and family here and overseas via email, text and phone. Oh, and I send postcards when we travel since everyone still enjoys getting the odd snail mail.

Good for you and your DH for trying to take proactive steps to manage your daily lives.

Facebook..fakebook..its just filled with drama and stress. I had an account and deleted it after 5 yrs..just hated reading the public fights..the fake posts..yuk!!

Our famz uses viber now. Its awesome cuz we're scattered..got sisters and bros living in USA, NZ, Fiji and Aussie so we have a group viber. We greet each other most mornings..chat throughout the day..and say goodnight. Next best thing to being together and a great way for staying in touch privately. I highly recommend it. Im trying to give up smoking..and they are all so supportive..they make me laugh and keep me strong.

I am trying to give up smoking, for good, as well. I only smoke a few a day... still a few too many! Good luck to you!
