Split travel costs - a very complicated calculation

SMof2Girls's picture

BM provided the receipt for the airfare she booked for herself and the girls to fly back to Maryland. One-way tickets (since they are moving here permanently). DH is required to pay half the cost (including her ticket since escort travel is also required).

The receipt total is $614.70.

Her first email said half was $180.47. :?

Her second email said half was $270.71. :? :?

Her last email (today) said half was $393.30. :? :? :?

Keep in mind, the receipt has not changed. She has not changed the flight (that she's told us). Is splitting a total in half really all that complicated? Blum 3

Before embarking on the existential question of whether splitting something in half is really difficult, ask yourself these questions first:
1. Is your BM crazy?
2. Did your BM finish elementary school?
3. Has your BM done a lot of drugs or alcohol in her life?
4. Was she doing drugs or alcohol while calculating those numbers?
5. Does your BM have a good enough vocabulary to understand what "half" means?

Only after these, young grasshoppa, can you find out the true answer behind the question "is splitting a total in half really all that complicated?"

Haha .. the scary part, she is now a certified respiratory therapist .. an "expert in her field" according to her. Not sure I'd want her administering medication or treatments to me or my kids!

DH replied to her last email asking how half is anything other than $307.35. I'm curious to see her response }:)

The military will pay her travel costs, plus she will get a dislocation allowance from the government. Not sure you owe anything if Uncle Sam is picking up the tab.

Figured it out .. her final cost she quoted as "half" includes half the cost for her to fly back to Texas after that weekend is up (visiting her boyfriend, no doubt).

She JUST purchased this additional ticket less than a week ago, so it appears that something in her plans has changed.

For the military folks, if the military is paying for these flights, would she still be getting a standard Southwest receipt? It doesn't show payment info (not that I'd expect her to send this), but how would I know if Uncle Sam paid or not?

Also, when they moved down there, DH didn't pay any costs for the same reasons you stated. But if she doesn't have the military buy the tickets, is she able to pocket the cash?

I'm confused on how this all works, and how we could possibly prove any of it.

She will be reimbursed after the fact by the actual mileage, when she files her travel voucher. The DLA (Dislocation Allowance) will also be paid to her at that time. She will do that when she signs into her base in MD.

Does the amount change at all based on her dependants?

If she's planning to check into her base in MD a week or so later, would she still be able to get reimbursement for the girls' travel?
