Reasons for a continuance to be granted? (custody hearing)

Can anyone help me find reasons for a continuance to be granted in our custody hearing? BM is saying it has been granted again, although we havent heard a word about it.
short version, in oct 2011, one was granted b/c she didnt have time to hire an attorney.
Dec 2012 at the final hearing, a continuance was granted because she never received the paperwork and didnt have time to hire an attorney.
new final hearing is Jan 2nd, and she just hired an attorney and said its being continued.
What are some 'reasons' for him to grant another continuance? Im a the end of my rope

I wonder if BMs attorney told
I wonder if BMs attorney told her he would request an extension, but BM failed to tell her attorney that the judge said the hearing will be held on January 2 regardless.
