Live and in the flesh support group in Philadelphia

Caitlin's picture

We all joke about finally getting together and meeting face to face, but is there anyone local to Philly who would actually like to form a stepparents' support group? Well, here's our chance - I came across this today:

...and wondered if any StepTalkers might be interested? I would love meeting you!

But Philly is 7 hours away Sad

We used to have one in my area but it went under for lack of interest! Can you imagine?

I have a feeling that this one will never get off the ground for lack of interest. I guess I'll just have to settle for my virtual support group - StepTalk!

My friend and I were thinking of getting one started but haven't been able to get past the fact of "how do we know that WE don't have a crazy BM amongst us just trying to get info" ....so this has put a stand still on things until we can figure this out.

I'm sure you can get info off one of the national sites. AND they will probably promote you on the site. Just look online for "National" or "Association" And "Blended Families" or "Step Family" and something should come up.

Maybe Dawn knows of some links too.

I think one of those groups could help.

I thought the same thing about support groups for parents of mentally ill teens, like what if I see someone there who knows SD. BUT I realized if I do, then they are there for the same reason.

And I wouldn't count BM's out. I think if you're forming a face to face group, that you will encounter many BM/SM's like myself. So what's the difference? It depends if you want a support group or a vent group. Because I don't think a real life vent group would be plausible for exactly that reason! Maybe once you got to personally know some other SM's, but the support group should offer more than just a place to vent- I think?

I've considered it to, but am worried about the time commitment. It is greatly needed.

I should clarify a bit better....I am a BM as well as a SM...just not a crazy one that we talk about on this site.....LOL.

My only concern is that the CRAZY ass BM would show up. I have enough drama in my life from hubby's ex, I certainly don't need one at a meeting with me.....if you catch my meaning...LOL.

I would say that you give it a shot. I'm sure that the national sites have guidelines and suggestions for how to take care of things like that. I'm pretty sure some wild people show up at other support groups (like AA or Mentally Ill) that there must be some sort of protocol.

Maybe you could have everyone sign a "membership agreement" on their behavior?

As for my SD's BM...she won't come within 100 feet of me. Doesn't even pull into our drive to pick up SD (parks a house or more over in the street and lays on the horn. Nice eh?) So I'm pretty sure she wouldn't show up at a meeting if I was there!
