OT - Tone-up Tuesday

Happy Tuesday, STalkers! Can you believe we're already halfway through January?!

I don't know where YOU are, but it's cold (some would say frigid) and snowy here and outdoor exercise is not always doable. Not everyone is a member of the Polar Bear Club or into skiing! On the flip side, exercising in extreme heat does not work well for everyone.

So when you have to keep your workout indoors and do NOT have access to a gym, what do you do? Jazzercise? Sweatin' to the Oldies?

Here are 10 things you can do:

1. Jump Rope
This is a good cardio workout! Not everyone has the ceiling space. Who can fake it? Wink

2. Stair Stepping
No stairs in your home? Find a BIG book, a stool, or a sturdy toolbox.

3. The Plank
If you don't have a lot of time, but want to build up your core muscles, this is the exercise for you!

4. Dancing
Dancing is a great way to burn calories and get your heart rate going. Dance like no one is watching (ignore your furbabies rolling their eyes)!

5. Lunges
Perfect exercise for the hallway - all the way down and back. Hold weights in your hands to make the lunges more challenging. Feel the burn!

6. Cleaning
Don't scoff! CLeaning can be VERY physical! Especially vacuuming and mopping. For a good arm workout, clean the shower stall, bathtub, and windows. You can kill two birds with one stone. Biggrin

7. Water Bottle Weights
If you want to do some arm, shoulder, and back strength training, you can make your own weights by filling up water bottles. If water bottles become too easy, use milk jugs. You can increase the water amount a little bit each time you work out.

8. High Knees
Unlike running in place, this will really get your heart pumping. However, it can be awkward and not everyone can do this (bad knees, bad ankles). Instead of running in place, try High Knees Marching.

9. Jumping Jacks
This in an elementary school throwback, but it's a great cardio workout. You might want to wear your sports bra...

10. YouTube Workout
If you have internet at home, search "workout" (or for a specific type of workout). This eliminates the need to buy workout DVDs and you can mix up what you're doing to avoid boredom.

This home workout really appealed to me:

Love all of these ideas. DH and I have invested in a mini home gym so on top of this we can also get in a good run and do some weight work. For me it's cold here today, I'm sure for East Coast people you would consider this a light sweater weather day (low is 44 and overcast).

I think she's making a joke about our cold front... LOL We're in a state of emergency because of the cold weather... No one knows how to handle it.

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

We got three and I swear everyone lost their s***. We had like 11 accidents in the first hour and they shutdown all the roads... I shouldn't laugh... But I'm from the snow and mountains... It was a bit hysterical to me... LMAO

I still don't get how we're in a state of emergency, I can see the sun, very little ice... And I have a jacket on...

I like how people empty out the grocery store (hurry up and get your ingredients for French toast!!!) like they'll be stranded for 3 weeks. Honestly, can they not get by with what's in their pantries for a day or 2??

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

It's always the bread and the milk... Which confuses the heck out of me! Apparently we're all making milk sandwiches and french toast? Until the power goes out and the milk spoils... Then we're just going to survive off bread!

hereiam's picture

No, no, no, when the power goes out, you put the milk out on the deck.

I don't understand the rush to the grocery stores, either. DH and I don't stock up, don't have an extra freezer or anything, but we would get by for a week (at least) with what we have. Even in the worst blizzard I have ever been in, we were not housebound for longer than a couple of days.

I live in a pretty big city, they do a pretty good job on the roads, so to think we'd starve to death before we got to the store is insane. Besides, I'd rather chance it than fight those people rushing the stores like madmen.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Hereiam, we have enough stuff in the pantry to get by for at least 2 weeks. It might not be things we WANT to eat, but we won't starve!

In fact, I think that might be part of the mad rush thing. People don't WANT to be stuck eating the contents of their pantries. What if they had to MAKE THINGS FROM SCRATCH??? Oh, the HORROR!!!!!

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

My in-laws... Meanwhile I’m looking at the pantry with no issues. Lmao

We’re snowed in:

I'd LOVE to be snowed in for a couple of days. This weekend would be ideal since it's supposed to be a skid weekend...

Thanks, DPW. I wish I could get a handle on this. Doc upped my med dosage awhile back and I thought getting past the holidays would help, but I'm sliding back downhill. Dammit.

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

My back is sprained... I'm on forced rest for a week... And it's KILLING me... I tried a light jog... Apparently that uses your back... Pullups are a no go too... I'm dying! Sad

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Oooooooooowwwwww!!! Jogging will jar your back. I recommend going outside and making snow angels...

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

I'm dying Aniki! I can't even stay in bed past like 6:30AM! Normally i'm up at the gym by 3AM... My body has all this energy and no ability to dispose of it. LMAO. Rookie mistake spraining that! If I survive this I'll NEVER make it again!!!

Snow angels sound nice Smile I have BioFreeze on my back right now too. I don't feel like ANYTHING.

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

Dang it Sad I've been on shock-therapy and at night and first thing in the morning it's biofreeze, it makes my back SUPER cold and numbs it... I was shocked at how well it worked!

It is 2 degrees here, -15 with the windchill, but I have a home gym (so, no excuse). It is calling my name but I just keep pretending I don't hear.

Thanks for this! I really need to do some planks, daily. Think I’ll start today.

#6 is LIFE. Every evening, I do a huge clean-up of the entire house, after the kitchen is clean and closed. This includes the toddler’s room, and whew I break a sweat every night.

Our daily “high” has been in the low 20s. This weekend is going to warm-up to 55/60* degrees, so I’m looking forward to getting out for a hike.

You totally forgot to include bedroom aerobics. There's a reason birthdays spike in the late summer months. }:)

All joking aside, if you an find a good PiYo video, go for it. Helps with balance, strength, and flexibility, plus there are some cardio portions you can incorporate, too. When I took classes for it, each section was the length of a song so you were constantly changing things up. Plus, if your evening is fragmented, it's easy to do 3-5 minutes to get one circuit done, then come back to do another 3-5.

Also, Netflix used to carry full workout videos, but you kind of have to know what you're looking for. It's not a great resource if you don't have something you specifically want to do.

Bedroom aerobics? Pshaw!!! Those activities are for EVERY ROOM IN THE HOUSE!!! }:)

My prescription that works for me is to walk outdoors. I am a year round walker, it always uplifts me. Also helps to pound the pavement when PTSD from step functions set in. Whether its 30'c or minus 30'c. Seriously just dress warm. I actually prefer winter walking to walking when its humid. Aniki, winter blues are real take care of yourself!!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

They are, Dovina. It's a terrible struggle. Especially when I can practically FEEL myself mentally sliding downhill. :?
