O/T: Need new-to-me bedtime binge show

momjeans's picture

On Netflix or Hulu.

Preferably no period pieces, no comedy - at least not silly comedy like The Office or Parks and Recreation.
I've already binge watched all the seasons, two times over of those shows.

I do like dark comedy, though. DH and I recently finished watching the series Baskets and really, really liked it.

Aside from those, I've already have seen Stranger Things, Black Mirror, Flaked, OITNB, A Handmaid's Tale. The Keepers, and Making a Murderer as well.

I have a hard time getting into DC/Marvel character shows. Couldn't get into Sense 8, despite all the positive raves.

What have you liked? Recommendations?

Really liked "Big Little Lies" and I'm starting "The Leftovers" (both bases on good books, ones I've also read). Dark, good acting, but not desperate.

I also watch any British crime series.

Particularly "Broadchurch."

Thanks!

Sorry, I failed to mention Big Little Lies. I binge watched that show. I think it took me 3 days. Loved it! Now I want to read the book.

Thanks for the recommendation of The Leftovers. I'll check it out.

DH and I recently just watched Dexter and that was good, and (I know you said no comedy but I gotta put this one out there!) we've started watching The League which is a really raunchy funny show.

Yes, the British version is very British and some knowledge of how their system works and who the players are is necessary.

Luckily, my DH grew up in England so I've watched almost the whole British series now (only 2 more episodes to go) and he can do "translation" for me.

Thanks for these recommendations, sueu2.

Baskets is a dark comedy. The story line is quirky, but it really delivered.

Zach Galifianakis plays Chip Baskets, a failed professional clown in Paris, who instead becomes a local rodeo clown in Bakersfield, California, where his mom and his twin brother, also played by Galifianakis, live. Louie Anderson plays the mom and it's just amazing stuff.

The West Wing. I've never watched this show, oddly. Pretty sure I'd love it. Thanks for the reminder to do so.

The Newsroom was phenomenal stuff. Such a good show.

Sorry, I left off a lot of what I've already watched. I've seen and thoroughly enjoyed: Sons Of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Newsroom, Homeland, True Detective, Law & Order and all the spin offs of that show.

But, I figure these threads always give other people new show ideas too!

At the moment i'm watching Orange is the new black.

Top of the lake is a good crime drama set in new zealand. Also for british crime 'Happy Valley' was very good.

Thanks!

A local friend recommended Happy Valley too. I'll definitely check it out.

I loved Happy Valley. Sarah Lancashire and James Norton are terrific in it. I'm just sorry there wont be a third season.

Have you seen Elementary? It's good, if you like mysteries and don't mind some graphic violence.

Galavant may still be on Netflix. You could call it a silly comedy but is laced with quite a bit of satire and dark comedy.

Stella. Stacey and Gavin (British, actually Walsh shows), really good, especially Stella

Harlots was ok, first season ( I know you said no constume drama)

British crime shows: Vera, Scott and Bailey, DCI Banks, happy valley

And I think the best crime show ever is French "Spiral", it's great but rather graphic but so well done. It's on Hulu. I am waiting for next season

House of cards, although we got bored this season

DH and I are very much into Americans. But you have to be into history, understand specifics of Cold War etc otherwise it wouldn't make sense. We also like Fargo

This is Us is a cute show. We typically don't like family dramas but that one is not bad

If you liked Dark Mirror you will probably like Dimension 404 on Hulu. It is also an anthology, but is lighter in tone Than Dark Mirror.

I enjoy the comedy "The Ranch" on Netflix. It is shot like a traditional 3 camera sitcom, but does not come across as a classic sitcom. Sam Elliott is one of the stars, so I really don't need to say anything else!

Another vote for "The Wire" as well. It is great, but sometimes heart wrenching, might not be good if you are trying to fall asleep.

It is older, but Farscape is one of the best Sci-Fi shows ever.

Thanks for the recommendations! I really want to watch The Wre. I haven't found a means to do so yet.... not on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime it appears?

In honor of the 15th anniversary of the show it will be back on HBO on September 6.
