Bratty McBratFace Ghosts Jury Duty

caninelover's picture

So awhile back a jury summons came in the mail for Bratty McBratFace (SD24).  I know SO told her about this because he even gave her the summons at our brunch just before Thanksgiving.  Bratty made some noise about wanting to serve on a jury since she had 'opinions'.  Nutter GF chimed in with the sage advice to tell them she is a student (how about just change your address?).

In our county students are not excused from a jury summons but they can reschedule to serve during a break.  Of course that assumes they still reside in the county which Bratty doesn't.  So instead of changing her address I guess she decided to ignore it.

In our county if someone fails to show up for jury duty the first time they get automatically rescheduled for a future date 90 days away.  They get sent an 'update notice' which is what came in the mail yesterday.  If Bratty ignores that then they could get a fine up to $1,500.

I was reading the notice as we were sorting through the mail yesterday and SO (who seemed embarrassed) told me 'well that's none of your business'.  I told him I agreed it was none of my business which is why these notices should NOT be coming to my home.  And if they DO come to my home - then they become my business by default.  So I happily read away.  If a damn 24 year old wants privacy then they should have mail sent to where they live, not their parents house.

I also told SO if another notice came in I was responding online myself with the change of address.  So we'll see if Bratty gets it done or not!

one good thing is by discussing it with you he can't jump on her 'but no one told me' wagon.

She can't blame us...though she'll probably try.

Sometimes I get mail for Toxic Troll, and just wonder if she does that on purpose. I read and tear up.

Darth Vader is a shopaholic and for some reason her name got attached to this address and we get tons of catalogs addressed to her.  That's junk mail so I get that, we just toss it.

Bratty needs to change her address with the court bit won't.  So any mail that comes here, I'm gonna read if I want to.

I can only imagine the Bratty Chronicles if she did serve jury duty. GUILTY cause I was offended. LOL

Or not guilty because Bratty can find an excuse for anything!

It would definitely be guilty if the defendant was an evil middle aged woman LOL.

They would probably not select her from the pool once she shared "her opinions".

Don't those notices come on a post-card like thing?  At least they used to here.

I wouldn't change her address for her one iota. I WOULD be changing the address on all those catalogs though, or just cancelling them.  I did that when the former owners of our home moved.

The first one comes in a letter.  This update was a postcard like thing, so yeah technically open anything but just read it.  But if it came in an envelope going forward I would open it LOL.

Ugh yeah we need to get on those catalogs.  Clogs up our recycle.

I'd be tempted to mark it 'Refused Not At This Address'  and drop it at the post office.
This probably would result in her being removed from the voting roles, but I don't think I'd really care.

That's what I told SO I'd do if I saw another one.  He really wants her to take responsibility for doing it though.

In my parish, you don't get moved up on the list. You get fined. The last time I was called and someone didn't show up, the Judge knew the person and had the deputy go pick them up at work. LOL

caninelover's picture

This county is way too big for that :). They really give people every way possible and even then it's really just a fine, though a steep one.

Well since neither BMBF or DH think it's a big deal, drop it, let the natural consequences of her actions happen as they may.

caninelover's picture

For now that's what I'm doing.  It does annoy me though so if there's a 3rd notice for a fine or whatever then I''ll contact the court with the forwarding address.  For now he wants to push her to take care of it.

I do completely understand your frustration.  It's hard when you are a big picture person and DH and BMBF are obviously live in the moment people.  So you can forsee the issue this is going to cause (a costly lesson for BMBF and by extension DH) which could all easily be avoided if she would just change her voting address and be done with it.  Instead BMBF will kick this down the line, then she will have a warrant issued and it will be this whole big drama inducing issue that could all have easily been avoided, but they chose to ignore a minor issue now, to perpetuate a bigger issue later.

I think its especially annoying since I had to sit through an uncomfortable brunch and 1.  Listen to her brag about how much she wants to be on a jury to give her 'opinions' and 2. Listen to her discuss her response with Nutter GF.

Then she actually goes and does...nothing.

notarelative's picture

If she really wants to be on a jury, than she should be registered to vote where she actually lives, and wait for a jury summons from there.
If she thought this through she'd realize it can be very inconvient to be on a jury in a place where you do not live.

caninelover's picture

She wants to be registered to vote in her 'hometown' and since she doesn't get along with Darth Vader or her siblings this is the only address she can use (with an absentee ballot).   She doesn't think things through rationally as you just did.

Good lord... hopefully she doesn't want to stay at OP house if she is selected!!

And told SO no.  No more crazy Bratty plans in general.  If she finds alternative housing then fine.  But I'm not hosting this bullsh$t.
