On a more positive note

Bf and I got a place together! The last month has been a bit stressful looking for a place to live with COVID-19. We applied for two places, the first one, after running around like chickens with our heads cut off to get everything required and got the security deposit, the owner said they wanted a double security deposit because we have a dog over 9 lbs and they had to evict someone with a dog that did a lot of damage. So that was not a great start to our search because the owner didn't mention any of this till we did all this work and we weren't paying around $5,000 prior to moving in just because we have a dog over 9 lbs. no way. Then the second place, a lot of people applied for it and we didn't get it because they wanted a two year lease, which we won't be here for 2 years.

So finally on Friday, bf went to talk to his current landlord who he already told he was moving out to see if the limited amount of bigger/more updated places had any availability coming up because we didn't want to keep applying and looking, northern va is very competitive and places go fast. Guess what! They have a bigger place with upgraded and added features coming up for when we were looking for and she was about to put it online that day! So instead we got it, do not have to pay an application fee or a security deposit or anything, so we will be missing out on a yard which we wanted, but we save ALOT of money to use to do what we wanted for our last year here, get to save up for our future move, and have way less stress, so we are super excited!

Edit: I will also add that bf and I are going to offer next Friday - Monday to BM (bf's time) so she gets a last weekend with SD before bf's time for the summer, let's SD have a fun weekend instead of being around us while we move, & allows us to move without having to worry about entertaining or watching a child. So it is a win, win, win, & I think it will make everyone happy

How awesome! Congrats!

Word of advice, not to be a Debbie Downer but from a practical/overprotective perspective:

Make sure you take your security deposit from your place and KEEP IT in your bank account. Always make sure you have enough money saved for you personally to get a place for yourself if you need it. That's not me judging your relationship; just a piece of advice that I wish I would have followed myself when I was younger. It never hurts to have an emergency fund.

That is good advice! Luckily, we have a plan on us both saving money this year, between the fact that we will be saving $600 total just in rent because we are moving in together, we have a can of saving money together, but then both are to be saving money in our personal saving accounts over the next year as well.

I'm a big fan of the "yours, mine, and ours" system of money management. It requires communication about mutual financial responsibility and goals without scrutiny of every dollar spent. Mutual responsibilities and savings first (because someone else depends on you), personal responsibilities and savings second, and play money third. That has worked out well for us.

Meanwhile because our timeline just moved up dramatically, we are going to be "nice" and offer BM to have her for the last weekend of May, when it is bf's time so BM gets a last weekend with her before bf's summer, let's the child have a fun weekend instead of dealing with all the packing/unpacking, and frees us up to be able to do all the moving. So really it is a win, win, win

Me too!

We just got an even better hook up where the landlord is letting us apply June's rent (already paid, because of first and last) for the new place and just pay the difference, so much much less money to put out right away, so super happy :)

The landlord was very happy about him staying, plus I bet with all the COVID-19 stuff, renting a bigger place to someone you know will pay rent etc, is a huge relief
