OT - Leggings

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I am so BORED. I've been on teleconferences since I got to work. Talk about sucking the joy out of life!

On a recent post, one person said Leggings Are Not Pants! Another said Leggings ARE Pants! Let's discuss!

Firstly, leggings should be heavy and OPAQUE. If what you're wearing is see-thru, they're tights. Please don't wear tights as pants!

Secondly, IMO, leggings are not much different than those skin-tight skinny jeans. Both are typically unforgiving and show every bump and bulge (tho' a strong pair could hold IN some of that). While I've seen plenty of people busting out of their skinny jeans (over the top AND through the fashion holes), I've yet to see someone in a pair of leggings with a camel toe... ~barf~

So... I don't have a problem with someone wearing leggings when they're paired with a LONG shirt - one that covers their arse. My boss is quite ladylike and she wears leggings with tall boots and tops that hit her around mid-thigh. She looks very classy.

ARE leggings pants? Or NOT? Thoughts/opinions. Please play nice! Biggrin

I love wearing leggings, I really do. It’s just that I look like a sausage in a sock in them!

TOO FUNNY!

I think that leggings can be worn appropriately. They can also be worn VERY inappropriately.

Do some people really not have mirrors in their homes? I just wonder what some people are thinking when they go out about, well, with all of their stuff out and about. Do they really think that they look good?

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I think THEY think they look good. Or they don't care.

SD23 - like BioHo - has an ongoing love affair with anything skintight and too small. IOW, her busted can o' biscuits (aka, muffin top gone wild) is spilling out of the TOP of her pants (and when she bends over, you might see her asscrack). Her tops are skintight and low-cut so the "girls" are prominent. When she moves and you see skin, it's always deeply grooved and dark red because her clothes are too damn tight. DH hates being in public with her.

tog redux's picture

OMG I always wonder too if they have mirrors. But once I saw someone who looked awful admiring herself in a rest stop mirror and I realized that they don't see themselves accurately, it's like a fun house mirror for them.

Fluff's picture

I really believe that some people have faulty mirrors that lie to them and tell them that they look fabulous and classy. They should send those mirrors back for a full refund!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

BioHo is built like a stack of tires, wears clothiing that shows every bump and bulge, and KNOWS she's HOT. *bad*

bananaseedo's picture

I don't mind them, as long as it's done in an appropriate way I guess...nobody wants to see your ass and panties...but yeah, there are worse things, skin tight camel toe white jeans with a thong and tramp stamp LMAO

Aniki-Moderator's picture

SOME might want to see your ass and panties...lol!

I've seen very artistic tramp stamps, but don't consider those to be for public viewing.

I'm sure some men would love to in the work place but then you piss off all the women also.  We can wear jeans and Tshirts but leggings aren't considered professional unless a long shirt.

I love the long shirt/leggings/tall boots combo.

So do I, bearcub. I have some knee-high black leather boots - they certainly keep the wind out! One of my fave things to wear with the leggings/boots is a 3/4-sleeve shirt and a loooooong poncho (hits about 2 inches about my knees).

bearcub25's picture

That sounds hot lol.   I love some of the long cardigans also, then you can wear a tank or spaghetti top but still look professional.

tog redux's picture

They are pants. But they are unprofessional, IMO, and people should be mindful of their body type before they put them on.

Cover1W's picture

I think they are pants!  I have three pairs, all opaque (!).  I like them neutral colors (black/gray) so they go with my long sweaters/tunics/cute shirts.  They are a blessing for PMS days and for office-y work - I am up/down/walking/standing/running/bending a lot at my job and good jeans and/or dresses/skirts are more difficult.  I do dress them up a bit so my tops with them are usually on the nicer side than what I would wear with jeans.  NOTE:  I do also have two pairs of stretch/skinny jeans and I love them.

The trick is knowing how to dress with them and to understand body type and SHOE coordination. My sister cannot wear them at all - she looks like a pear and they accentuate her skinny legs.

Yes, we have a more casual dress policy at my work place.  Generally people are in jeans/relaxed clothing.  In my position dress/skirt is rare for above reasons.  I don't want to be helping fix a copier in a dress...

bearcub25's picture

Same here so I bough a bunch of long skirts that are billowy for days I need to dress up but still may need to do some type of maintenance work.   At least with the skirts I'm covered if bending or squatting and and they are comfortable.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I don't have a problem with skinny jeans unless they're too tight. When a man's junk is outlined... BLECH!

--figureditout--'s picture

I am with you on the shoe coordination! I live in the FL panhandle and seeing people wear flip flops with ankle length leggings makes me insane. Same with athletic sneakers and hooker heels. We get all kinds with the turistas.

advice.only2's picture

Leggings are pants, but I think they are only pants if they are black...if they delve into the nude color then you are screwed.

I agree Aniki when I wear mine I am wearing either tall boots and a long shirt, or a long shirt.

ITB2012's picture

I saw this lady going into a store so I followed her because I thought she was naked from the waist down and wanted to make sure she was okay (like not mentally or physically ill and didn't notice). I got close enough to say something but also close enough to see she was wearing leggings that matched her skin tone. I'm sure other people did a double-take that day, too.

bearcub25's picture

I almost rear ended someone looking at some chick with nude leggings, and she looked like a can o busted biscuits.  Yeah, NO.

ITB2012's picture

Oooh, one of my favorite rants!

I love leggings. I wear them. Tops have to hit mid-thigh at a minimum when wearing leggings.

They should NOT be worn with a shirt or sweater that hits at the waist or hip. If I can see your crotch when you're walking or when you sit down, I don't think you're wearing a long enough top with your leggings. And you look like you forgot to finish getting dressed.

And I've seen women wearing tights, basically pantyhose, as if they are leggings (aka as if they are pants).

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Tights worn as leggings is a peeve of mine. When I can see the color/pattern of your underwear (or that you're going commando), they're TIGHTS!

Thumper's picture

Leggings, pants or not?

Nope they are leggings or gym clothing, Yoga pants IMO,

Many women can pull them off just like your boss. Worn with equestrian boots. That is how I wear them.

Take today for example...I have on my Yummy leggins on and a winter top. Length of top goes to my finger tips.  Super cute outfit.

Certain cirumstances allow this attire, others do not.

Lets face it some people should not wear skin tight leggins. But to each their own.

GL, I trust you don't have T-Rex arms... Wink

that when you wore leggings, you WORE A LONG ENOUGH TOP OVER YOUR HIP AREA to cover your ASS.

CYA, baby! Thinking oversized sweatshirts, ankle boots, and a feathered "roach clip" in the hair. *dirol*

--figureditout--'s picture

OMG....the feathered roach clip. I remember being about 12 and coming home form the State Fair midway with one. My dad disposed of it toot sweet. He was a federal police officer at the time. I didn't know it was paraphernalia until my brother told me.

Cover1W's picture

I had a pair of purple leggings paired with a while huge shirt with multicolor "paint drips/splashes" all over it.  Shoes were black flat pointy lace up things.  Hair was off-cut and moussed UP.  Dangly blue geometric earrings. Worn sometimes with my dad's old mustard-yellow short sleeve cardigan.  I still remember that outfit easily.

Monkeysee's picture

I love leggings! They need to be opaque though, anything see through is a no go. And not to work unless it’s with a long top or a dress in an appropriate way. I live for comfort & love my leggings, though I do like a nice pair of jeans when I go out. I wear a lot of skirts & dresses to work, business pants have never suited me.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

business pants have never suited me

For the life of me, I cannot wear a pair of khakis. They look AWFUL on me. Over the years, I've only found about 10 pairs of slacks that work for me.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Ermagawd, when it comes to frump and khakis, I may as well get some reading glasses and a chain, slap my hair up into a bun, and wear a cat-hair covered sweater. LOL!

Cover1W's picture

Me too!  I don't know what it is about khakis.  I have a pair of khaki colored jeans but the pants are a no-go.  I also find it very, very hard to find good slacks. I just got rid of my one pair of good ones because they wore out.  Still haven't bothered to find a replacement since I have, you know, leggings!

SecondNoMore's picture

I work in fashion, so take that for what it's worth. I think of a pant as something with more structure, and in most cases (unless they are ill-fitting or you have particular body concerns) you should be able to wear them with a top that hits at the waist. I get the point about skinny jeans, but most have more substance and pockets on the rear.

Leggings can definitely be work-appropriate in the right environment when paired with a tunic or dress of any kind. They basically fill the role of a very opaque pair of tights. The only time I would wear leggings with a shorter top would be to work out, for dance class, run errands before or after either of those, or to lounge around the house.

I had the strangest experience with leggings this past summer.Ummm leggings are not pants.During summer months I like to travel and go to estate sales. So I pull up with my car and I see someone standing out front. I said to my friend OMG is that a child they have running this estate sale. No it wasn't. It was a very short woman you had on white leggings and was wearing a depends on underneath them. Her top was short just like her. Honestly I tried my very best not to look at this woman but my eyes just kept going that way. This woman looked horrendous and if she has a mirror shame on her. So I guess she was dressing for comfort that day but OMG ...really. Leggings are not pants.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Ermagawd, I now have that unfortunate picture in my head.  *shok*

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

I don't mind them at all. As long as they aren't see through.  I mean dress for comfort. Biggrin

Aniki-Moderator's picture

PA, I've seem too many who are wearing tights. "Hey, where did you get those skivvies that say BITE ME?"

--figureditout--'s picture

I have a pair of ivory workout capris, and I make damn sure to wear flesh tone drawers with them. I used to ride competitively when I was younger and we actually had judges in eq classes who would deduct points for panties showing through whites.

--figureditout--'s picture

It was how I learned that flesh tone under white doesn't show through. My mom was and still is a modesty stickler, hence my collection of the rainbow of camis for my dressy tops lol.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Flesh tone works the best! Flesh tone that matches YOURS. A friend of mine has some in a lovely shade of creamed coffee. Smile

Jcksjj's picture

I vote yes, they are. Theres a few people who can get away with wearing them Kylie Jenner-style, but most should probably stick to a longish top.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Darlin, I don't know what "Kylie Jenner style" is, but I can guess and am damn afraid to google it...

Jcksjj's picture

High waisted with a crop top. I just googled it myself for fun actually and I take back what I said. Even she cant always get away with it.

--figureditout--'s picture

I was very anti-legging until my surgery in September. Until then, they were pajamas or lounge wear, always with a tunic or oversized tee.

I had laparoscopic biopsies on the uterus and one ovary, so I had multiple holes in my lower belly. None of my denim was comfy, so I turned to leggings and jeggings. My jeggings of choice are Agnes and Dora, and different solid colors (raspberry, cobalt blue, rust, dark grey).

I wear them with tunics so as to cover my butt and giblets. Some I pair with tall boots, but I love my Chucks and ballet flats.

DH and I started playing tennis recently. I wear workout capri length leggings and long tees for that. My workout capris are thicker and shiny...no cotton blend in them.

I used to call jeggings bipolar pants. I am now obsessed with them.

Crspyew's picture

But they aren't pants and imo have no place in most office environments. Most people who wear them don't style appropriately.  I wish I could share pictures of the things I see everyday riding up the escalator. It hurts my eyes and brains.  I get that they are comfortable but so are a pair of well fitted dress pants.  I am really sad to see cropped shirts and sweaters coming back into style---that is going to make things worse!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I wish I could share a picture of my boss! She looks like a model and is always classy and fashionable. Even in the leggings! Smile
