OT - Thirsty Thursday

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Happy Thursday, STalkers!

Right now, I'm pretty sure I sound like Thurl Ravenscroft after he smoked 20 packs of cigs in 5 hours. Maybe I should record my voice for Halloween...

What is your go-to drink when you have a sore throat or a cold with a phlegmy throat? Is it hot? Cold?

I typically go for hot drinks to try and loosen up the crud.

  • Peppermint tea
Smells good, tastes good, and is mentally soothing
  • Hot apple cider
    Need I say more?
  • Hot toddy
This is made by adding hot water to the old family cough remedy (honey, lemon juice, and whiskey).

I reeeeeeeally want that hot toddy, but my workplace kinda frowns on that... DAMM!T!!!! Diablo

There's this Apple CInnamon Herbal tea that's super good when I'm not feeling good. Not to sweet, tastes like unsweetened apple cider. I LOVE it, and it soothes my throat Smile

THat's what my DH thinks too. lol.

You could try Emergen-C Smile That's what he uses instead. it fizzes so it helps sooth the throat a bit.

Garlic & Ginger with your choice of flavor. With honey, so its more like a syrup.

CLove, I used to concoct my own herbal remedy tea for bronchitis and it had garlic in it! I always added honey, but you couldn't taste the garlic!

I love dogs's picture

I really like lemon or mint tea with honey but hot apple cider sounds divine right now!

You can even buy packets (box of Dirol of apple cider where you just add hot water. They're actually quite tasty and definitely hit the spot!

drop a halls cough drop into a cup of hot tea. I used to work in the medical field and we swore by this for sore throats and colds. tastes gross, but works great.

My mother used to drink hot lemon water sweetend with honey.  She said the lemon really cut the crud.

Either Peppermint Tea or Ginger Tea - extra strong with honey.

I have done hot toddy when desperate, when super, super congested. I don't like the alcohol when sick.

Cover, honey, lemon and whiskey are a holy trinity for a cold.

My Dad mixed up a batch (equal parts of all). A spoonful for a cough. 2 spoonfuls with hot water for a toddy.

  • Lemon juice helps cut through congestion and reduce phlegm
  • Honey soothes the throat and helps supress a cough
  • Whiskey is a decongestant and dilates the blood vessels, which makes it easier for mucus membranes to deal with infection. It can also help you sleep a bit more restfully.

Now this doesn't mean mix 1 cup each of whiskey, honey, and lemon and glug it down!! ONE spoonful as cough medicine and TWO spoonfuls in a mug of hot water. That's all. That toddy has a half ounce or less (usually less) of alcohol.
