The sound of silence

WalkOnBy's picture

I am sitting here in the solitude of a very lovely and a brand-new hotel. I checked in after work, changed my clothes, went next-door to the restaurant to have dinner and a few drinks and now I'm back in a very comfy bed, in my pajamas watching television.

Just a few minutes ago the enormity of my grandmothers death has hit me. I went into safe mode when she died-I knew that I had to take care of business, clean out her condo, get it ready to be listed, try to protect my mother from her own pain. Most of that meant that I could not deal with my own pain.

A while back I posted about my sister/cousin, Loony. She reared her very ugly head again during the last couple of days. She sent me a text message demanding certain items in my grandmother's home. She also involved one of my grandmother's neighbors, and interesting man who felt the need to play intermediary.

Needless to say, she will not be getting any of the things that she requested. As I texted her earlier today, I would sooner smash everything into tiny pieces and set it on fire in my fire pit than send it to Alaska for her.

Families are such an interesting thing-that's really all I have to say about that.

Ahh, families. A bunch of people who, if not family, would have nothing to do with each other.

I am pretty sure I would never be friends with my sister, for example. Or have anything to do with her, really. She's kind of a bitch.

Enjoy the hotel room and relax and unwind!

I texted her earlier today and told her that I would be handling the estate. That there was nothing left for her. That because she chose to consider herself a nonfamily member for the better part of 25 years, that we would follow her lead.

I'm sure this will piss her off, but I do not care.

What she demanded was a collection of dolls that my grandmother hand-painted, sewed clothes for, and assembled. Loony says she has it on tape that my grandmother requested her entire collection go to Loony's daughter. A child who is only five years old, and who has seen my grandmother maybe three times and her whole life.

Nosy neighbor Jerry, who says he was in the room when this conversation took place, says that my grandmother only requested one particular doll.

No matter-that bitch will get nothing and like it.

Check with an estate attorney in grandmother's state to see what the laws are there, but I've heard/read several different times of families giving the trouble maker a very small (100.00) gift of the estate so that they get something and can not contest the will of how the estate was handled. Sorry you have to deal with her. The death of a close family member is hard enough without this added stress.

I did mean to invoke the wise Forrest Gump - glad you caught that!!

Loony remained in my Grandmother's life, though she lives in Alaska and came to visit her once or twice a year. I had no problem with that, as I realize that people can have relationships with whomever they want. What I don't understand, have never understood and will never understand, is why Loony cut my mom (and consequently EVERYONE in our family save my Grandmother and my father) out simply because my mom asked Loony how she was doing after a miscarriage.

What I really have a problem with is how Loony waltzed in to the rehab facility last month demanding to be made POA. I also have a problem with the way Loony texted demands to my mother and me (without ever saying hello or asking how we were doing) about what she wanted from my Grandmother's house. I feel that if she wanted something, she could have at least called or been nice. Waaay too much for Loony. Moving on, bitch!!

It's funny you mention "ignore the whore" - when the first text from Loony to my mom came in, my mom handed me the phone. I read it outloud, laughed and said, "ignore the whore, mom, just ignore the whore." My mom chuckled a bit and then scolded me for my language Smile

My grandmother doesn't have much - her condo, her belongings and a small amount of cash. For reasons I will never know, she had a $100,000 mortgage on a condo she lived in since 1978! There will be some money from the proceeds of the house, and the will states that everything goes to my mom.

Loony texted me that her daughter has two or three of the dolls my grandmother made - apparently she gave them to Loony's daughter the last time they visited (August of this year). As far as I am concerned, that is what she gets Smile

Yep - I feel that the dolls that were already gifted were that child's inheritance. Keep in mind, Loony's kids are 5 (maybe 6?) and 8 and the only person in our family who has ever met them was my grandmother.

Pffft - stupid is as stupid does when it comes to Loony.

crazy beeyotch.

deaths bring out the worst in families. thankfully no one in my family has much of anything. after my grandfather died, my grandmother moved into a basement apartment with my uncle upstairs with his family. several very nice, expensive, and sentimentally treasured pieces of jewelry given to her, from him, went disappearing one by one. anniversary bands, tennis bracelets, diamond pendants, you name it.

she had a strong feeling my cousin had come downstairs while she wasnt home. she never saw those pieces again. it hurt her so bad, she sat me down one day and said "here. i want you to have this. and i'm giving it to you now so that i know that YOU are in posession of this and it doesnt up and disappear when i'm gone." she gave me her original wedding set, the one pops proposed to her with when she was 16. i've worn it daily since then, it's been over fifteen years.

i'm glad your grandmother put you and your mom in charge. smart, smart woman.

There are some things we thought we would find, but we didn't. A particular piece of jewelry. My grandmother's mink. A few other things. It's possible that she gave them away. It's equally possible that Loony took them the last time she was in town back in November.

She gave me her wedding set (she still wore it long after she became a widow) and another ring when she went into the hospital.

She texted "I have it on tape if you need to see it."

I am still ignoring the whore. Nosy neighbor Jerry told me that he was in the room when the "tape" was made and that my grandmother pointed out one doll and one doll accessory that should go to Loony's daughter. Loony said the entire collection.

Like I said, I will smash them to pieces and set them on fire in my firepit before I let that ungrateful bitch have them. She has an uncle who is an attorney, whom I know very well. I won't be surprised if he sends a letter to my mom.

I shall tell him to fuck off Smile

I had my husband change the locks on the house at 3 in the morning after she died.

Every nosy neighbor on her court had a key, including the nosy neighbor Jerry, who texted Loony about my grandmother's decline last month. Told her she was "dying and she had to get here NOW!" My grandmother was not dying....

I will post a whole separate blog about Jerry. That guy is a dick!!!
