Unbroken Streak Of Summer School By SD 17.5

thinkthrice's picture

Possibly a new record. Twelve straight years of summer school starting with kindergarten all the way through Junior year in HS!

SD failed two regents exam and her Math class, barely scraping by all the other courses. This was two weeks AFTER the brag about making it to Senior year.

I'm just an ancient by today's standards, but it USED to be an embarrassment to go to summer school. Not for the Girhippo Clan apparently. Oh well, a few weeks of snacks and socializing and SD will be all caught up (insert eyeroll avatar).

Of course, YSS 13.5 will also be going as well (as always, following in the steps of OSS stb 20.)

You know, this makes me very angry for all the kids who work hard all year, hand their work in on time, attend class every day. And these Summer School kids slide on by with about 6 weeks of 1/2 day of school.

There should be a grade of "meets criteria" and no actual grade. So your eventual GPA could be 'M" - meets criteria. And this will preclude you from any college including community college unless you attend 1 full year of remedial classes.

Well that is what I would do if I was in charge.

Although when my grand daughter told me she was attending summer school (she is 9) I had a fit at my daughter until she told me it was voluntary to get a jump start on the next school year. Yeah, OK. THAT kind of summer school is acceptable.

I can tell you that summer school for Chef's kids has never been about getting a jump start on next year. It HAS been the result of not turning in assignments, skipping class and goofing off during the regular school year. SD practically LIVES at her only friend's house during the week (does overnights there M-F). I'd bet the ranch she just WATCHES her friend do her homework. Odd phenom: SD starts out doing ok for the first week of reg school then the descent begins once past introductions and fluff work
Then suddenly, she starts turning in her homework (good to know the Girhippo can do grade school level work). Then SD bombs every test because its obvious the Gir has been doing some of the work FOR her.

Hell SD even has a special note taking assistant (after months of doctor shopping to find a quack who would designate her as "learning disabled--other") and open note tests. She still fails because mommykins has told her that she doesn't have to do anything she doesn't feel like doing or doesn't want to do.

Your tax dollars at work.

Around here there is no "getting ahead" summer school which I think is too bad.If your granddaughter's area is like that then she probably didn't fail but has a few weaknesses that would become a real problem without summer work. There is nothing wrong with summer review Smile Heck, I worked my butt off and bombed Geometry in high school and retook it in the summer even though I barely passed since I was going to need more math. 25 years later I still hate geometry...

I've honestly never heard of a kid going to summer school this many times...good grief... she'll never hold a job and be a productive member of society.

Not according to the fake-o daycare receipts the Girhippo used to submit at CS hearings. Ironic since all three attended summer school every.single.year, stayed at friend's houses or were watched by the Gir's BM when they weren't with us every weekend.

At the very least, they care that much. SS13 has probably maybe turned in 2 assignments since Feb 15th when I started working full-time. He is near failing or failing every single class...even PE. Yet the school never ever ever gives him a warning, detention, email to DH, text to DH, note to DH. Nada. Summer school? You gotta be kidding! That would mean a teacher would give a flying fart and actually put in some effort.

Your skids should move to England and go to SS13's school, they'd be in heaven.

The eldest has been graduated by a hair for two years now and is working on a career of being a world class pot fiend.

Ugh. So aggravating. SS17 had school down to a science. He wasn't really stupid, just incredibly, incurable lazy. He was all about doing anything and everything with the least possible effort. He'd do really well the first quarter, then do less and less every quarter till the end of the school year. Each year from fourth grade on, he either failed his core classes or barely squeaked by. Why! Because he learned that if he showed up at summer school (3 weeks 3 hours a day) they'd give him a 65 regardless of what kind of effort he put in, and he'd move along.

Why work hard and do what you're capable of when you can screw around and still pass? Apparently mediocrity is good enough for some people.

Besides, if he's in summer school, he gets to hang out with his flunkie friends instead of babysitting his little brother.

NY sucks as far as education goes.
