Bolt Out of the Blue Home Invasion!

Sunday is my only "day off" and by that I mean catching up with chores around the yard and house if I'm not being comandeered into working on the rental properties, etc.   The day before,  I spent most of the day hauling firewood and stacking it for the winter.  So Sunday I"m washing my hair, not dressed, in my pjs, and I hear this woman's voice saying "helloooo?" coming from the INSIDE of my house.

Now normally I lock the doors when I'm home alone but Chef had a fit the day before as one of our number pad locks failed to work (back door) because I had locked it and he was trying to get inside from the back door as he had another a dump truck load of firewood in the back yard.  Backstory:  Chef comes from the sticks where NOBODY ever locked their doors and kept the keys inside of ignitions in their vehicles UNLOCKED.   I have the opposite background having lived in urban areas where you lock EVERYTHING!

So I approach the woman standing in my living room, glasses off (I"m blind without them so at this point I have NO idea who is standing in my living room), dripping wet from just having washed my hair.  Turns out it is "SIL" who NEVER comes to our house--well once every five years or so!!!  I didn't hear her knock if in fact she actually did (In Chef's old neighborhood, people just walk right in).

SIL thought I had retired as I had mentioned a few years back so she thought both her brother and I would be at home.   She is retired and on disability so she doesn't understand the concept of working 7 days a week.   She was "in the area" (she lives in Girhippoville)  so she thought she would show up for a visit (where I come from that is entirely poor breeding--you never show up unannounced nor walk into someone's home).

She scared the beejeebus out of me!  Anyway I explained that I had changed my plans and had not retired as of yet.  She noticed the large pile of firewood out back and inquired about it.   I said that this was my main project for today;  getting it stacked in the woodshed and out of the elements.  She offered to help stack!  So I quickly got dressed and  out we went.  She said "my brother doesn't expect you to stack all of this by yourself, does he?"  And I said "normally no, but he has a bunch of projects so its' on me."

She asked if she could have some wood for her fire pit and I helped load some of it into her Jeep 4 x 4.  She spoke of OSS (25) getting engaged.  I probably cooked my goose by saying "I know!"  I'm sure it will get back to the Girhippo.  She also mentioned that YSS 18.5 had an 18th birthday party thrown by the Girhippo--tacos for everyone!  I said benignly "that sounds nice" and left it at that.

I couldn't ascertain if she had actually attended the taco soiree or not.  Chef wanted to know this when he came back from the several jobs he was on... LOL.   She seems like the most decent of Chef's relatives, however still need to be careful what we say to her as it will most likely get back to the Girhippo.   The less the Gir 'n' clan knows about us the better!

It's a good thing your surprise visitor wasn't of the cloven hoof variety.

Who does that?!? Who just wanders into someone else's house without permission??

Both the true crime junkie and the gun owner in me are appalled. WTH is wrong with Chef's family tree?

is that Chef's family lived so far out in the back woods/sticks that they all knew each other and thought nothing of just walking in during the day.   I'm sure however, that a stranger who walked in may have been staring at the business end of a shotgun.

I told Chef that our family would NEVER have thought of doing such a thing and would have left a note.

I was LOL'ing at the just walking in. We don't lock our doors except at night and my whole family has a key to our house (I have one to everyone else's too). We aren't knockers- my parents have definitely stopped by in the morning when no kids were in the house and realized DH were... enjoying ourselves!

We are in a weird little bubble county and are considered very very safe, though we are growing and changing and I should start paying attention to locking our doors.

Glad she helped stack the wood!!

Although she is thinner than me, she is a lifetime smoker as is almost all of Chef's family.  She's about 4 yrs older than me and boy was she huffing and puffing.  Chef was amazed that she didn't complain about the wood stacking as apparently she had nothing good to say about her stepdad (Chef's dad) making the kids stack wood when they were younger.   I told Chef that usually as you age, you begin to appreciate the value of hard work...usually,

From what I know of the background you are talking about, helping another with firewood shows kindness and a solid offer of frienship.
