"Homeschooling" Update & court tomorrow

stormabruin's picture

So DH called to tell me he just a really interesting conversation with the lady through the school district who oversees the homeschool kids.

Since DH's inquiry on them back in September this lady says she has sent BM a notice every 30 days insisting she present required paperwork & test scores on SD & BM is 2 days from being 90 days out of compliance. The lady has recieved ZERO test scores on either of the kids since 2009. She has BM listed as the "Teacher" & crazy neighbor-lady as the "Teacher's Aide". According to the teaching standards per the district lady, the Teacher is required to spend a minimum of 6 hours a day educating the student.

DH told district lady he would be mentioning her name in court tomorrow & she said absolutely. The judge can contact her or social services & get any information they have on the case.

I have a hard time swallowing this. There are no test scores or ANYthing else to show that any kind of schooling has gone on since 2009. Why is BM only listed as being 90 days out of compliance??? Why is her ass not planted in a fucking jail cell??? Why is the welfare of 2 kids not more important than people only doing what they have to in order to meet the minimum with the school district & CPS??? Why has NOTHING been done outside of mailing a notice every 30 fucking days??? If these people were interested in helping these kids get educated & resolving this issue, why have they made ZERO effort to contact their father in an effort to get things done???

I'm so irritated, & sadly it isn't because I expected things to be any more than what they are. I'm just pissed because everyone claims to be working "in the best interest of the child". The School district, CPS, Juvenile Court...ALL of these organizations are supposed to be focused on the child, yet nobody cares! NOBODY!

As mentioned, DH has court tomorrow. BM is taking him for arrears & is claiming he is $2000 out from when he stopped paying on SS back in September. A normal judge would be pissed at her for suggesting he owes her $2000 when even if he were in arrears it would be something around $600. I've learned enough about this judge to expect she'll refuse to hear anything from DH. She won't care that the kids are rotting in BM's basement & she'll order DH to pay the $2000 BM wants in her pocket because after all, BM is the victim here.

Rant over. I'm so tired.

Has DH asked the District why they have not filed Educational Neglect with CPS?? I don't know if it's just my state but I thought in the majority of states that educators, Dr.s, nurses etc are all MANDATED reporters. That means if they have no proof that education is being provided, they are mandated to report it to CPS. I can't believe this employee is OK with having DH throw her name around in court since it appears that she has majorly dropped the ball on this??? WOW!

I know CPS contacted BM not too long after DH notified the district that BM was still living in the district boundaries. I don't know where CPS stands with the case right now, but I would imagine if they were staying on top of her something would have happened at this point. BM would've been scared into turning in SOMEthing to at least have the records show that schooling is happening. Even if it isn't, you'd think she'd cover herself with the paperwork part of it.

If the paperwork is outstanding, I would think CPS would have taken action by now to force something. If they can't force BM to comply they would then contact DH to at least make an effort to do something. It's a crime!

Yes, when DH spoke with this district lady in September she admitted she dropped the ball because when BM notified her that they were moving out of the district she should've followed up with the new district. Instead, she placed their paperwork in her "Defunct File" & never gave it another thought.

Absolutely this.

It sounds as though this probably isn't this particular person's responsibility. She may not have been in the position for the entire period, or she may not be the one assigned for that particular district, or perhaps a report was filed and then not followed through at a subsequent step. Or she may not realize her ass could be on the line. Either way, state employees in most states are absolutely mandated reporters. I would definitely follow through on this one. I am sorry to hear that the kids have fallen through the cracks, again.

This lady has been the one in this position longer than the kids have been in the district. She admitted she was at fault for letting it go this far.

I contacted CPS myself, though anonymously, to report the kids not being in school. According to this district lady, CPS has also been contacted by the district.

I don't know which complaint triggered the contact between CPS & BM, but I know it was made because SD got mad at DH assuming he was the one who made the call.

Is homeschooling illegal in your state? You really need to check the homeschooling guidelines vs. checking with the school districts. Most school districts have no clue what the actual law is regarding homeschooling. Here is the website for homeschooling laws which should help you either let it go, if they are within the law or fight it. But believe me, that lawyers will take you for every penny you have and YOU must search yourself what the actual laws are.

Oh I feel your pain on the homeschooling issue. My 2 skids just started school, because their mom was NOT working w/them nearly enough. (probably not at all). The older one had attended school for a few years, and knew how to read, so he wasn't too far behind, but the younger one is 1.5 grade levels BEHIND where he should be.

How can anyone do that to their kids?

People suck.
