SD5 was taken to hospital this morning.

Last time we had SD5 was last Monday night. She seemed fine, but she told us that BM thinks she is allergic to their pet rat because she keeps getting puffy eyes when she wakes up. I asked her if she has been crying at night before sleep becuase I know sometimes that makes your eyes puffy the next day, and she said no, so we just kind of let it go.

Yesterday when my fiance dropped off his son, SS3 at BM's house, he saw SD5's eye. It was all puffy and almost swollen shut. BM said it's been like that all week. DF asked her why she hasn't taken her to a doctor yet and BM claimed it'll be fine...

So apparently SD5 woke up this morning and could barely open BOTH eyes, they were swollen almost shut. Poor thing! BM took SD5 to the ER this morning...why she waits an entire week and ends up in the ER? Who knows?

Anyway, would she really suddenly have an allergic reaction to a pet they've had for 2 months? We have a dog and we did at one time in the past year have 2 cats, plus she is around horses and other farm animals at DF's parent's house...so I'm not thinking she'd be allergic to a rat, right?

I don't know what the issue with your SD5 is, but I had (HAD) never had allergies in my life but within the past few years starting having issues. I took allergy tests and was allergic to everything they tested me for (including animals - and I had worked in a vet clinic with no problems for YEARS).

Sky- FYI Stress triggers allergies. I know because stress did this to my skin. (new allergies)

That's what I was thinking -- she's could have an eye infection that she's transferring back and forth. Hmmm....we'll see.

Apparently the ER prescribed an antihistamine and also an antibiotic -- they said that should cover either one, whether it's an infection or allergy. They recommended she be taken to her regular pediatrician or an allergist for skin testing to rule out an allergy. I'm sure it'll be at least another month or so of this before BM will take SD5 to a doctor again.

Get this. I have been allergic to Benadryl for 6 years... :?

Butterfly, I am allergic to antihistamines!! Damn things give me BAD hives! I was told by the dr to use Zyrtec or Claritin for my allergies...and they both cause HIVES!! OMG - how funny is that??

Wait? A "pet" rat? Really? I would not allow a rat in my home. Remember plague?! Yikes.

Haha, I know Smile We think it's weird that she has a rat, too! It's a really odd pet for BM to get...who's OCD cleanliness-is-next-to-godliness.

Ive heard pet rats are really great pets.I thought it was funny they have such a terrible rep for being dirty and gross but according to several pet magazines they are one of the cleanest pets you can own.

No, I totally agree with all of you that rats are fine, it's just knowing how the BM is we are still sort of shocked she'd WANT a pet rat...guess you just gotta know her! Smile

LOL Foxie- I hear what you are saying but no way in hades will Butterfly hold a rat. My cat would destroy the rat anyways. Wink

You can thank my grandmother and all kinds of stories about plague in old europe, etc. for that.

I KNOW! It is quite rare too. Go figure. I do know cats are allergic to it also-not that I am a real cat or anything. LOL
