Selective hearing strikes again

Ss5 had an IEP last week and it was suggested by the physical therapist that he MIGHT not have Autism. She said that while it may have been the closest thing the doctor could come to in order to describe his issues at the time(he was 3), Ss5 no longer displays some of the major signs of autism.

Yeah that went right over BM's head. She always wanted a special needs child and continues to tell people that ss5 has autism dispute it being suggested by numerous other people including DH, his teachers and ss7 therapist. Even ss5 doctor at the last visit said he wasn't sure any more but when we ask to get him re-evaluated BM says no or drags her feet. Shockingly enough BM no longer likes that doctor and is 'looking for a new one'.

We are going to see how he does next school year and work with him over the summer if he continues to improve we will push for a re-evaluation. Not looking forward to the stupid battle. But DH is worried that having Autism on his medical file will hurt him later in life.

On another note BM may still think he has it because he still does al the stuff at her house because she lets him. The screaming, crying, and fit throwing.

autism by its nature is a neurodevelopmental delay, not a static condition that keeps the child the same forever. Sounds like the diagnosing physician could have more readily used the PDD/NOS (pervasive developmental delay) much more accurately. Still and all, that probably inaccurate ASD diagnosis will not hurt him later on if he is functioning as a normal adult. But I get that the point really is the bm, and as a therapist who works to support parents of truly special needs kids, her munchausen behavior is abhorrent. Sad

how pathetic! nothing like truly caring for the educational and developmental needs of the child, but instead is more interested in how the label makes her look like such a self-sacrificing martyr...

I would say so everyone feels sorry for her. They were going to adopt a special needs child but DH thought they were too young at the time to take on the responsibility. Plus it cheaper to adopt special needs kids.

At one point BM was going to be a special Ed teacher.

I don't think he had autism I think he was just a spoiled brat that threw fits when he didn't get his way and never learned to talk because BM never talked to him or asked questions. Just put cartoons on and left it at that.
