You Love Me More

the real mom's picture

The other night I was making dinner, and SD comes up to me and says, "Mommy, I love you SOOO much!"

I said, "I love you SOOO much too."

Then she said, "I know you're the mommy that loves me the most."

:jawdrop:

I was like, "Oh honey, I don't want to hear you say that ever again. You know that's not true right?"

*shrug*

I said, "Critch loves you as much as I do. We both love you the same, okay?"

It broke my heart. I can't imagine feeling like my mom wasn't the one person in the world who loved me more than everyone else... even a step-in mom.

I am VERY blessed and know that even more now that I read others' posts on here. She is almost 7... so I am hoping I can hang on to this sweet little girl that we have right now. Smile

While it is sad that she knows this... You are very lucky that she can tell you that and not feel guilt.

Your response to her was spot on. Congrats for being such a good SM. Biggrin CTBB used to tell me he wished DH and I were his parents. (he's our nephew.) He also asked DH when he was 7 if I had any female cousins his age! Nice to hear the good stories once and a while. Of course, CTBB was a monster as a teen, but we won't get into that right now!!

I am not sure what the circumstances are with your SD, but it is amazing how keenly aware children are of their situations.

They absolutely know whats going on for the most part.

It is very nice that she can talk to you. As she grows, she may become resentful simply because she hurts over her moms rejection. We went through helll when SD was 16 and her mom moving out of state and out of her life became too much for her to handle. She turned on me and took it all out on me.

It is important to always let her know that she is important and like you did...to reaffirm that she has a mom and that her mom loves her. She needs to understand that not all moms show love in the same way...it sucks but it is true.

Good job to you!

She has only had a 1 week visit with her BM since the divorce in 07. I overhear every conversation they have on Skype, or email (mainly because I'm helping her spell words etc.), and most of the time on the phone. She has called her mommy MAYBE twice since I have been around, except for that 1 week visit.

She definitely has the personality of a people-pleaser.

Plus, every kid knows actions speak louder than words. Smile
