Back child support will be withheld from the relief checks

notsurehowtodeal's picture

Back child support will be withheld from the relief checks that Congress just approved. Back taxes will not be withheld, but back child support will be withheld. No details on how it will work, but I just heard it on the news.

Haha, BM gonna PAY!!!

CS ended over a year ago, but balance due, plus interest & arrearages should wipe out her $$.

Couldn't happen to a nicer narc BM.

I'm thrilled! My XH is thousands behind!  I think I should get it.  He plays the system and makes sure he owes taxes each year so I won't get his tax check.  I think I deserve it after doing it all by myself all those years.

Only if they aren't currently paying, hopefully? BM is behind on CS, and as annoying as that may be, she needs the stimulus more than we do, so I really hope they don't withhold it since she is on a payment plan.

Where are you seeing 5000?

My SO owes because when they first divorced she lied about what support he had been giving so he started in arrears. He pays extra every check and I pay more when we can but we still owe.

It sucks that not only will she get the extra money for the kids but she'll also get his which would really help us right now.

Think of it this way, it will help him get caught up.

Are you and your SO still able to work, right now?

Yes thankfully we are but every day we worry because we both work in medical. SO is literally one of the first people in contact with anyone coming in the hospital because they have to do screenings.

My thing is he is actively paying. He is trying to catch up. What if he wasn't working? I guess the kids just don't need to eat on his weekend. I mean BM getting her own money and the 500 for them isn't  enough.

There are plenty of people in arrears who are trying to catch up.

Let me add I'm not even mad at her in this case because she has nothing to do with this decision.

I get it and it does suck that one won't be differentiated from the other, a deadbeat vs someone who is trying.

I hope you and your SO stay safe and healthy.

Thank you. It just hard when stuff like this happens. He tries and it's all set up against him. She had everything from the start.

When arrears hit $5000+, that is when federal refunds can be seized to help pay them. I believe that is also the point that passports can be revoked or denied.

Incorrect.

He has NEVER owed more than 5k. Max owed was less than 4200 and yet his passport has been revoked and his info was sent for fed withholding.

A friend of mine raised three kids with next to no help from her ex. It was so bad that he'd get arrested and then he'd pay for a bit so he wouldn't go to jail then would stop agsin. He owes her thousands thousands of dollars. He then played lottery and won, not much but maybe 5 or 10k so he went to claim his money. Ha. It was all taken and given to her. He was then calling his adult kids whom he barely had any relationship with and screamed to tell their mother to give him money back because it's HIS. The nerve
