Am I being over protective?

I have learned a lot from you guys about what I do right as a parent and also got it handed to me for what I've done wrong and I always appreciate it. I've learned there is a time to chill out and pick my battles and their are times to punish more than just a stern talking to. Well enough rambling here is the problem. SS5 and SS10 were watching my recording of so you think you can dance and I asked them to watch something else because there is a lot of butt grabbing and grinding in that episode and I know SS5 and I don't want him trying to emulate that with the little girls he plays with. Also SS10 was helping me make vegan soap for my friend's birthday and I made him use a plastic kid safety knife to cut the soap base. I know he is older but I get nervous when I see anyone holding a knife. Last night when we were watching fireworks I didn't want the boys playing with sparklers because they were letting them get to close to the palm of their hand before putting them out. DH says I am being to overprotective.

Am I ? Be honest with me

My SD was not allowed to use knives until she was 7 she had not even touched a knife. She is 8..almost 9 and struggles to butter her toast! You are doing the 10 year old a disservice by babying. I am a free range parent and let SD do a lot of stuff, but also explain to her that if she acts like a monkey her privileges will be taken away.

SD13 thought it was okay to "butter" her bread with her finger. (Imagine my horror when she was diagnosed with pinworms.)

TV.....spot on.

The rest is over protective. Bs4 has been using butter knives for about a year now. And even if a spark of the sparkler got them, what the worst that could happen? It pinches a bit? Those things won't even burn the skin, they just aren't hot enough.
