Last night DH and I were discussing his daughter's unhealthy, obsessive, oedipal complex (is it still called that when it's a daughter/mother thing instead of a son/mother thing?) or in other words....how SD13 is BM's mini-wife.

Somewhere in the course of the discussion, DH says: "Well, we all know that she's going to be a total hottie someday...."

I replied with a horrified "What?!?"

DH: "Oh come on, just LOOK how beautiful she is now."

Me: wtf written all over my face

DH: "Well she is."

And I vomit a little in my mouth.

I don't know if that's normal or not. She is an average looking girl. How can he see "hottie" especially when she looks so much like BM? hmmmm.

My family wasn't overly demonstrative with compliments or with physical affection so sometimes it's difficult for me to gauge "normal" behavior but at the very least, this looks like DH is a bit blind to reality. There is nothing wrong with being average and yet they tell that girl she's a genius and a beauty queen all the time. Doesn't that do the exact opposite for someone's self esteem once they grow up and realize they aren't as perfect as mommy and daddy told them they were?

Ah, thank you! I knew there was a term for it but couldn't remember it last night. I'll pass that along to DH, lol.

I hate to be at all crude about it but your DH did find BM attractive enough to screw at some point..... So to him, BM and SD could be absolutely delightful looking. Physical beauty is a somewhat subjective thing and when you add in the parental factor, it's not Super surprising he thinks his daughter is beautiful. Though the way he put it is a little skeevy to me personally....

This!

I understand parental blindness, but that just sounded gross to me. Again, I have friends whose families were way more generous with compliments than my family was but it always made me uncomfortable.
