ET Tells Her Kids They're Brainwashed

lieutenant_dad's picture

Apparently when ET took the boys to lunch last week, the three of them got on the topic of the COVID-19 vaccines. DH, the boys, and myself are pro-vaccine and have been taking precautions to prevent COVID. ET and her DH? Not so much.

Anyway, vaccines are now available to anyone old enough to get them. I signed myself and OSS up for the vaccine. I showed DH how to sign up. We've both told YSS when it's available for his age (hoping soon!) that we'll get him the vaccine. We aren't pushing the boys to get it; they want it.

YSS and OSS relayed this to ET, and ET told them that they have been brainwashed. OSS rolled his eyes, but YSS is apparently pissed. I guess he and DH talked, and YSS is very worried he's going to bring COVID home from school and get us all sick. DH is a smoker (down to only 1 cigarette a day, woo!), ET's DH is a smoker, and ET is "medically fragile" (interpret that how you will). He knows if they get COVID that they may get much sicker for their age than others, and he doesn't want that on his conscience.

So, ET telling him that he's brainwashed didn't exactly ingratiate herself with him. And she continues to wonder why her sons don't want to see her. YSS is supposed to visit her this weekend and totally forgot, and he wasn't thrilled to be reminded about it, either.

Oh, and yes, we will bring up this bit of anxiety with YSS's therapist. We know he is dealing with generalized anxiety, and given how much of a hypochondriac/medically dramatic she is, I'm sure that extends to health and personal responsibility related to keeping others healthy. We'll just add it to the things to pay attention to with him.

I hope those young men reach a point where they are able to write off ET as worthless and cease contact. Or, at the very least, limit contact to something like a card for her birthday and Christmas.

I think they'll end up limiting contact and write off her opinions, to a certain extent. I'm actually quite shocked by how much YSS has "turned" on ET because he was always her golden child. But I can't say I'm mad that he has seen the light to some extent.

So she's a medically fragile hypochondriac who won't take the vaccine. Makes sense.

Never in my life have I seen so many people actively working against their own interests, in my own family as well.

It absolutely floors me, especially since she has gotten the boys all their vaccines including flu shots. From what I can tell, she's drinking the conspiracy theorist Kool-Aid. I assume it's because of her DH.

But, she's an oddity even outside this. Was a pretty devout Christian but didn't mind cheating on her husbands. Has never lived outside of a major city except the last 4-5 months but she has ALWAYS had this country twang to her voice (not at all common for the areas she or her family has lived). Forced both boys into college prep programs, but then didn't help OSS with paperwork AND disparages folks who go to college. There are other examples, but she is just a walking contradiction.

My sister is 64 and a nurse, and she won't get the vaccine. Granted she is relatively healthy for her age, but her reasoning is 100% political and not rational at all. Her 70-year-old husband is the same.  I don't get it. Even if you think COVID is "no big deal" and "no worse than the flu", why not at least try to prevent a week of feeling lousy, at best?

BM.

This is an interesting topic.  I literally just made my appointment. SS17 and SS16 can get theirs now too. SS17 said to SO last night about making an appointment.. not sure if anyone has talked to BM about it. I said to SO he will have to talk to BM about it... I'm curious on her stand. I can see her being iffy and acting all motherly concerned. *insert eye roll*

OSS is 18, so no issues there. YSS is almost 15, and DH has joint medical decision making so when it becomes available to YSS, he can take him to get it. DH won't play games with her on this, and I can only imagine YSS would lose his mind on her if she tried to prevent him from getting it.

SS16 would be like your YSS if BM tried telling him no. I don't think BM will prevent but, she always feels the need to put her worthless words of wisdom.

Your SO should not speak to BM about it - she's not really their mother. He has them all the time, he makes the decision (along with the kids themselves).

Not disagreeing there..... if she catches wind (which she would) it would be drama... Youuuuu didntttttt tellll meeee. Crap.

BM here isn't planning to get the vaccine, and she's anti- mask, too.  I know she talks to skids about it, because they've made comments like "mom would be mad if I wore a mask." SMH. I'm not rushing out to get the vaccine, because demand still far exceeds supply here and I'm young and healthy, so I can wait my turn, but I doubt DH will get it at all. I'm sure BM will end up getting it when she needs it to go on vacation at some point - conviction only goes so far.
