Had to take away SD's dinner tonight.

It isn't as bad as it sounds, I did give it back. Blum 3

Just wanna know if anyone else has/had this problem.

SD was choking herself on her food and her drink. She ALWAYS does that with her drinks, she drinks too fast and ends up choking herself. But tonight at dinner, she literally choked herself on EVERY bite. She was literally sitting there coughing on her food every bite for atleast 15 minutes. I told her atleast five times to slow down that she wasn't chewing well enough and was choking herself. Eventually I took it away until she was done choking and told her to take small bites and chew each bite atleast 20 times.

Is this normal at 6? Damn my childlessness!! Blum 3 Don't know if this is normal..lol

My sd 7 didnt have this problem, its the opposite, takes forever to eat! But she would chug her drink first then be too full to finish all her food so my h had to take away the drink till she was donw with her food, he did that for several years and still usually does it now.

I have an extremely picky eater. She isn't picky in general, she reserves it for me. She has to pick one item each meal that she will then refuse to eat. If pushed, she will put it in her mouth and force herself to vomit. It's absolutely a power struggle with her. The solution turned out to be cutting out snacks completely, serving her last (she gets her plate when I get mine so I can sit and watch her eat), she gets only water to drink, and she doesn't get a napkin (because she spits food into it) and doesn't get to have her hands in her lap (she has hidden food in her lap, pockets, fed the dog). Now that she's missing her afternoon snack every she is quite enthusiastic about dinner.

This isn't really a problem of her not wanting to eat. She eats like a horse and is super skinny. I honestly don't know where she puts it all. We have never had any problems getting her to eat. It is just she is physically eating too fast, not chewing well enough and choking herself.

My ss had this issue as well. He would eat so quickly that he would then vomit-he did this starting at age 6 and did it all the way until about a year ago. He threw up on sidewalks, in parking lots,-the last time he threw up it was in the parking lot of Cracker Barrel. He literally inhaled a huge plate of pancakes with 5 tons of butter in about 2 minutes.

Is it possible when she is at BM's house she's not getting enough to eat? I know my SD was only getting 2 meals a day when she lived with BM bc BM never got up early enough to give her breakfast.

My SD did this as well when she was younger (probably 6 yrs of age as well). I finally found out what was the cause of this newfound behavior:
1-She was very hungry
2-She was not getting enough food at home
3-She doesn’t like her BM’s cooking but loves mine
4-She is worried at BM’s that there is not enough food
5-She eats in front of the TV at BM’s and just shovels it in her mouth

So is this normal..hmmmm I don’t know...will it stop….I do believe it will. Try to be patient with her and if it is because she is not getting enough food at home make sure she knows that you have plenty of food and she is welcome to have it as long as she eats properly. Personally eating for me is an experience, I love to cook and eat. My SD now helps me with some of the cooking and we set the table for every meal that we have at home and she now really enjoys her food.

P.S. I did the same thing you did by taking her plate away until she stopped choking and then gave it back to her and told her to eat slowly.

Prince Hygiene used to do this with hotdogs. Tried to swallow it whole. I just thought that was going to be his career path.

Her not getting enough to eat at BM's might be a problem, but she is with us for the entire school year, and here I know she gets enough food, I wait to hear "I'm full", SD is a very good eater.
