OT-Weight Loss Surgery

Has anyone here has weight loss surgery?

I just got approved, I have a "low" bmi (35.1) for the gastric sleeve surgery, but have sleep apnea so I qualified. I should be getting my official surgery date next month. They are saying end of May, early June.

I'm super excited but nervous. Up until the last 6 or so years, I have been on the slim side. I do have PCOS and since my hysterectomy it has just been an extreme battle for gaining. I will manage to work my butt of for a month, lose like 5 lbs and then do something like go out to eat and gain 6 that weekend! It has been really disheartening.

The doctor has a lot of hope for me to lose around 50 lbs, which would be incredible. The surgery helps reset your system and people with PCOS do really well. So I am hoping that is true with me too. My mom had a bypass like 20 years ago and has always done well, so I think I can take a lead from her. She lost 180lbs! But obesity runs in my family as well as my other issues. I wish it was something I could do myself but I just keep failing and feeling more and more like a failure. Having this hope and goals feels pretty dang good! Gonna get my skinny on!

I would love any tips on getting through the first 30 days of liquids and purees from people that took it seriously. The FB page I am on is full of crap. They recommend so many things that don't fit into the dietary restrictions, I am not going through all of this and NOT follow what I need to do! Coco pebbles and Tropical Smoothie aren't going to cut it! LOL

Best of luck on this journey.  I had a friend who had gastric bypass and said protein drinks were all she could handle at first.  She worked in pureed foods later on but mostly bland.  She said mashed potatoes were easier on her stomach than rice and any fatty meats were rough.  Basically she lived on pureed chicken and mash potatoes for about a year.  She said spicey foods or very greasy foods she either gets sick from or if she eats it she knows she will pay for it later.  Overall she did well and lost about 130 lbs.  She did say she had a lot of hair loss from her body not being able to process nutrients the way it used to, but overall she was happy with the results.  Maybe check out tik-tok there seems to be something for everything on there.

I had gastric sleeve surgery about six years ago. Lost about 100 lbs, but gained back about 30. Still a nice net loss. I would like to lose 10 pounds, but I don't stress about it. Never lost my taste for junk food, unfortunately.

I did really well post surgery. Just follow the plan for reintroducing foods slowly. Honestly I am still so sick of protein drinks that I can barely look at them, but they were necessary.

I can usually eat an appetizer for my whole meal, or split something with hubs when we go out. It took me a while to figure out how much I could eat, as my whole life I always wanted more no matter how much was on my plate. So that's really nice.

I do still get nauseous from greasy food, but that's a benefit!

PM me if you want to talk, any time.

Thank you!!

I found a protein drink set that was 10 different flavors. I have it saved to order once I get my date. I am hoping not drinking the same thing will help. I also found a sugar free protein jello, 20g protein! I thought that was kind of cool. Hopefully that will give me the feeling of eating something during that all liquid stage.

My mom is still the same way. When we eat out she still just asks to have half of it boxed before they bring it out. Then she has lunch the next day. She eats protein forward and avoids carbs. She doesn't get nauseous from greasy things but she.... stays on the toilet for hours... to pay the price for it. So she avoids those too LOL. I think having her support is going to help!

My Mom had gastric sleeve surgery 2.5 years ago. She lost 80 lbs and has maintained that weight loss. She will say that she struggles still with carbonated beverages and she doesn't like drinking out of a straw - causes reflux, but otherwise, she is very happy with her decision. She had many health conditions like high BP, water retention, and autoimmune issues that have leveled out since she had the surgery.

My mom 20 years later still doesn't do well with carbonation, which is fine, that isn't the end of the world for me.

I think coffee is going to be my source of despair! LOL they say no caffeine for 6 months post op! The FB group I am on has people posting that they started drinking it again after a few days, but I am going to take this seriously. I am pretty good with following rules, and plan on doing so! I think when the reward will be visible and I start feeling like myself again, it will make the restrictions easier to deal with.

Greasy high calorie foods still make my DH Sick when he consumes too much, it's been 10 years since his surgery. VITAMINS are incredibly important! Especially iron!

I went to Mexico July 3 and did it. I had the sleeve. I have had zero complications but I have only lost 30 lbs. My BMI was 35. Every one of my surgery brothers and sisters have lost double that . I don't know why I am such a slow loser but I am. I hope this means I won't have the loose skin problem or the gall bladder problem.

I recommend My Level 10 Life on you tube . I ate a lot of Greek yogurt and Ricotti cheese bake

I will check that you, thanks!

I see a lot of people that went to Mexico to have it done. It crazy the cost to have it here vs. over there. I am really hoping for 50 in a year. If I lose more, great, but I don't want to rush it either, like you said, I am hoping to not have the skin issues since I am the very low BMI side for getting this to begin with.

What exercising have you done? I hate the holding pattern that I am in right now. I can't lose more than 3 lbs or I won't qualify so I am not really doing anything other than maintaining. I have looked into kickboxing classes! There is an all women's kickboxing studio near me and I think that would be a blast!

DH had gastric sleeve surgery 11 years ago. He lost 180 pounds, I think, but he's gained about 50 back (he probably got too thin with his initial weight loss to be honest - he looks gaunt in some photos). Initially he mostly ate protein shakes, which was not the most healthy. He now eats almost anything, but in smaller amounts. He also had his gallbladder removed, so high fat foods cause him problems. He also gets very full after eating red meat and has problems with acidic foods. He's not always good about not eating too much, so some times he still has problems with vomiting after meals and that's ruined his teeth, but I think some of that might be related to his adhd (impulse control). He used to be better about exercise, but got lazy after he and I entered into a serious relationship. I will say that BM had some sort of weight loss surgery around the same time and has gained most of the weight back (if not more), so it's not permanent. Also, because DH lost a lot of weight pretty fast, he had problems with loose skin around his midsection.

One suggestion - if you haven't had your thyroid tested, make sure that your weight gain is not linked to thyroid issues. I've gained weight in recent years and had trouble losing it and come to find out I have a very underactive thyroid. Some doctors are very good about testing and I assume that if you are approved for weight loss surgery your thyroid has been tested, but if not, it's worth looking into.

When I first started gaining weight I did have my thryroid checked, it came back normal. I am sure that is part of the preop blood work, but if not I will make sure to have it tested again, just in case!

Whenever I hear that a doctor says thyroid is "normal," my brain sends out a little yellow flag. Usually, by "normal" they mean "in range." For many of us, in range is just not good enough, we need thyroid levels optimized. Please make sure your doctor does a complete thyroid panel. Ideally, Free T4 will be mid-range and Free T-3 will be at the top of the range. You can find actual numbers by searching "thyroid labs optimized levels."

I have a dear friend who was always seriously overweight. She finally had bi-pass surgery, lost around 100 lbs, and gained it all back. Her sister did the same. Several years later, my friend was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had her thyroid gland removed. She was put on supplementat thyroid and slowly all those extra pounds melted away. She has no trouble now staying at a normal weight. Freaks me out to think that maybe she was hypothyroid all along but was never properly diagnosed and treated.

I'm 65 and have never had a doctor that treated thyroid adequately. I've had to figure it out on my own. I know I'm running a little low right now because my temperature is consistently a degree low, but my doctor wants me to reduce my thyroid dose. Based solely on a low TSH, which is suppressed in patients taking natural thyroid (me!). He didn't even test Free T4 or Free T3.  I'm resigned to having to fight this fight the rest of my life.

Okay, I'll get down from my soapbox now. Wishing you all the best!
