OT breast biopsies...how bad are they?

Chmmy's picture

I went for a breast biopsy and they prepare you for the pain. This is going to sting.... you feel a pressure and then the pain wil subside in 30 seconds, stuff like that.  I felt almost nothing and certainly not pain. Im sitting around with ice packs on the incision. Apparently it'll hurt later but almost 2 hrs after I still feel fine.

I figured since many ladies here are at an age or almost there where this could happen, i just want to let you know its no so bad and ask if anyone thinks they over drama the pain. My arm does feel like its falling asleep a little  because i have to hold it close to my body to avoid bleeding. The worst is  not using my right arm. Thats been tough. I can't stop

My sister said it was horribly painful. And she's pretty damn tough. It may vary from person to person AND nerves being touched may be a factor.

Prayers all goes well for you!

I kept asking if it was ok that  it doesn't hurt.  He said thats great. The worst was laying still in an uncomfortable position for a long time. I guess I got lucky. Hope my results are lucky. Thanks!

Thanks. I left a comment on your last blog so best of luck with your daughter. I hear girls are more likely to go undiagnosed ASD because its more common in boys. Im glad to hear you got early intervention for her. Ill be following.

Best of luck with the results - it's a stressful thing to undergo.  I got called back for further tests after a routine mammogram in Feb of this year, fortunately it turned out to be a fatty lump.

Isn't a fatty lump a fail-to-launch adult skid who spends most of his/her time on the couch?

I don't remember it being too painful. I didn't have cancer . My results were a necrotic mass of dead tissue and a ruptured duct that I had to have surgery to cut away. So I have Frankenboob. I am grossly misshapened but hey it wasn't cancer. I will be praying for you

I'm a breast imaging RN and am involved in breast biopsies at a very busy facility. I would say that more than 90% of my patients have little to no pain after a biopsy - depending on the type of biopsy and location. Ultrasound guided biopsies tend to be the least painful, stereotactic guided biopsies a little more so,  and MRI guided the most painful, but even then, it's more "tender" or "sore " vs severe pain. Biopsies close to the nipple tend to be more painful as do lymph node biopsies. But most patients do well with Tylenol and ice packs. I think the must agonizing part is the waiting for results.

Most biopsies do tend to be benign (not cancer), but we need to be certain. It is very stressful and makes everyone very anxious. Deep breath.  I hope all goes well.

I haven't experienced a biopsy, but just wanted to say that I'm hoping for good news for you!

Mine was not painful.  What I found unbelievably aggravating was the insistence that, despite the benign findings, I still needed a lumpectomy because they were suprised at the benign findings and "needed to be certain" because it did not match what they expected from the mammogram.   Apparently the only one who was pleased at the results was me.  2 more mammos and ultrasounds and an MRI and still nothing has changed and no tumor has made an appearance.  Very glad I did not fold to the pressure to let them cut into me!   I hope that you have a similar good outcome!!!!!

Thanks everyone. I got a little sore last night but feeling ok. Waiting for the results on Monday.  Ive had 3 biopsies this year. Cervical,  uterine and now this. The others were just inflammation causing my problems.
