"All We Have to eat is 'Can I's' Diet Food"

Can I do this's picture

Just to provide some background before I type out the conversation I just had with SO ... I started a new weight loss/healthier eating/"diet"/exercise program. Basically, I know I could be make a lot better choices about what I put into my body and how much I exercise and it's been about 3 weeks and I'm already seeing some results (YAY!). Needless to say, it's not like I'm on NutriSystem or buying specific "diet" food like that. I've switched to using Almond or SoyMilks, Greek yogurt to supplement in recipes, buying a lot more fresh produce, more fish, "healthier" snacks like Kashi brand, etc.

Anyway, SO just called me and said he was going to take back some bottles to the store and before he left, he said the SDs told him there's no food in the house. (Funny, because he JUST went grocery shopping Monday before they came back for the week ...) He told them they are mistaken because he just went shopping. Here's the thing ... if it's not in plain sight to them, they will NOT look through the cupboards to find something or the fridge. They won't move things around ... you know, some boxes of crackers, etc fit better behind other boxes. Our conversation went like this:

SO: "Then SD13 told me they are almost out of Lucky Charms so I should buy some more."

Me: "Um they are only with us until Friday morning. They both will not eat an entire box in 2 mornings. You won't touch it, I won't touch and they aren't back for just over a week. That will be a waste of money. They can have pb & toast, or eggs or bagels or I'll make pancakes Friday morning since I odn't have to work."

SO: "Oh I went ahead and bought it." (This man has food assistance and even though it's not an "issue" most of the time, he doesn't realize he's losing that assistance after he graduates in December. I'm trying to get him to understand we will be on a budget for food then ... and we HAVE to stick to it.)

Me: "Well that just seems like a waste to me. I bet if I was home you wouldn't have."

SO: "And then they said again there was nothing to eat and they were starving. And again I told them I jsut went shopping. And they said "All that's here is 'CAN I'S' diet food. And we are not allowed to eat that. So they asked me to buy them bagel bites." (Again, it's not diet food ... and I just asked them to be courteous about what they are eating, not to waste it and if it's the last bit of yogurt or fruit or whatever to let someone know so that I don't go in there expecting to make a smoothie or whatever new recipe I've found and then not have what I think I did.)

Me: "Ok. Well they weren't told they CAN'T eat the more healthier food. They should be eating it. It's good for them!"

SO: "Oh and get this. They BOTH ate an entire box of bagel bites."

Me: "Like they shared a box? Ok ...."

SO: "No, they each ate their own box. There are 9 bagel bites in each box! I can't believe that. But I guess they are growing kids, a pre-teen and recently turned teenager. They probably need it."

Me (after getting online to see how many calories are in bagel bites): "Um. Wow. They each just ate about 500 calories, depending upon which kind you got them. That's a lot. And those aren't "good" calories, SO."

SO: "Well they are growing kids. Remember being a teen and just eating and eating?"

Me: "Sometimes it's a little different for girls. We respond to puberty different, etc. I'm not saying your girls are fat. By all means, they are in fine shape and are not overweight and are lucky in that aspect. BUT they should be eating probably 1600-2000 calories a day ... they just ate either 1/3 or 1/4 of their calories just from those bagel bites. Now, those are loaded with fat and sodium and bad carbs. And, sure maybe depending upon what else they eat today, 500 calories might not be an issue. But they are also VERY inactive. They sit in their room on their laptop and smartphones or in front of the tv. They rarely go outside. If they were involved in a sport or something I probably wouldn't blink an eye. But still, where the calories come from is something you have to consider. There's fruit, crackers, cheese, lunch meat, veggies ... all kinds of things that would be better for them."

And then he changed the subject ... I guess I went off on a rant about healthy eating because I've been so good for almost a month and I really feel like it's becoming more of a lifestyle change (like they say it should) rather than a "diet." And I was always a very active teenager but I was still overweight because I didn't eat well growing up. And besides them, SO has put on about 30 pounds in the 4 years we've been dating. I worry about him, too. I'm just trying to make sure everyone in my household is ok ...

OHHHH! And then he was saying how he's probably taking them back tomorrow (even though her holiday weekend doesn't techically start until Friday afternoon) ONLY because the girls told him they were leaving Thursday night to go camping. So I said, "UM NO! You got them a day late because your mom wanted them and now you are losing out on the weekend due to the holiday and it's Wednesday and she hasn't even contacted you to see if she can get them tomorrow. We were going to go to the beach this weekend when you thought it was your holiday and finally build a fire in our fire pit. After you realized you were wrong, I figured we could do the fire tomorrow night since I don't have to work Friday morning and then they can go back to BM Friday when we get up and around." He said, "Oh I should keep them til Friday just to be a di**?" I told him that is not what I meant. I was more concerned that YET AGAIN here it is 24 hours before something and there is NO COMMUNICATION about it ... but she can text you about ridiculous shit (like if they got their MIDDLE school schedules and pics taken ok yesterday rather than ask her children that are in 7th & 8th grade!) and not even discuss something about when the exchange should take place versus what she might request, etc. And I told him I'm just sick of things always being last minute. Granted, I might not be there, but it just seems like everything is last minute and he's not phased by it. I don't function that way and if I'm going to have to offer up some assistance with gas money or something, I don't want to be finding out about it the day before!

Ok, thanks for letting me go off about that!!! Sigh!

so, you like the skids around??? i hate last minute changes, too, only b/c 99% they mean more skid time, if it were the other way around i would be tickled f'n pink to be w/o skids ~ probably be a bj in it for dh.

I don't like them around, I don't hate them around ... I'm kind of indifferent. The 4 of us do things together and it's fine because SO "deals" with them ... I just come up with the ideas of what to do because if I don't we'd all be sitting at home on the couch or in our rooms 24/7! I just hate how manipulative and controlling BM still is over DH and he just sits back and doesn't even realize it! Plus, until he finishes school in December (besides his food assistance), we really only have my income as he is not working ... so if she wants them tomorrow, sure, she can have them (because, yes, I do prefer to have it be just SO & me), but SHE will have to drive the 35 minutes to our house to come get them as I am broke until Friday and we were not informed ahead of time for me to budget the gas money.

i think you should stay focused on your diet, who gives a shit what the skids eat?? do you really need another "issue" with/about skids? i know i don't. in fact, skids aren't allowed in my kitchen, i put a bowl of snacks (junk food) in the middle of the dining table when they are here and i feed them breakfast, lunch & dinner. all frozen pre-packaged food or hot dogs - hamburger helper on occassion. i cook dh & i a well rounded dinner practically every night. before the witch hunt begins, in the beginning i cooked all kinds of fun healthy stuff for the brats~ but only to be picked apart for it not being ready early enough (mil and bm's mom mainly - sorry dinner isn't ready at 5 when you have a fucking 80hr a week job ) or some other stupid reasoning and just not appreciated.

Yes, I will stay focused. It's important. I just needed to go off about how they said it was only my diet food ... it's food ... just realize if it's the last of the strawberries (or cucumbers or WHATEVER), let someone know! I stopped cooking for everyone about a year after I moved in with them ... I love cheese, SO hates it ... I love casseroles, SDs hate them ... I love fish, no one else in the home likes it ... it always seemed like no matter what I made, no one wanted it besides me.

I used to do the same thing Star, I used to cook from scratch and took an hour to prepare meals. Got the same results as you. Then I switched to what you did with the no kids in the kitchen rule and left out ricekrispie treats bananas apples and such and would only allow skids in Kitchen before 11 am for cereal or poptarts only. After that I will get it. But they just sneak it anyhow and leave wrappers stuffed in couch or just throw them on the floor. Apparently their grandmother thought I was awful for that and would send boxes of donuts, poptarts, hostess cakes and I mean 8 to 10 boxes for one weekend. So now I dont do anything. I make sure BD is fed when she is with me. But screw them. Let gramma or dad do it. Not my problem. I tried. Was kicked back.
The funniest thing ever was when SD12 wrote a note a few weeks ago and stuck it on the fridge that said "we dont lik (yes lik) 2% . We lik skim milk. It is more healthful"
I wrote next to it "What is lik?" }:) and "I will buy skim milk when you stop eating 4 dozen donuts and cakes and brownies and McDonalds each weekend, as they are not HEALTHY either."

I hate how they sneak stuff and then the wrappers show up all over! After we moved last fall I instituted food/drink in the kitchen and dining room only ... no more food in your bedrooms, living room (unless it's like popcorn while we watch a movie) ... oh my gosh their bedroom before we moved was DISGUSTING and I could just see the more "country" living area where we are now being infested by mice and ants if I let it go on ... SO is SOOOOOOO oblivious to that stuff! Last night SO ran to the gas station and I was in the bathroom. I heard SD13 get in the cupboard, unwrap something, go into the living room and walk right up the stairs ... she'll brush her teeth for bed and then an hour later go eat 5 oreos and then go back to bed. It's gross!

onebright1's picture

I instituted the same rule and it lasted about 1 day. BM started texting SO how unfair it was and "her kid this and her kid that". So the next time they came back they just refuse to follow the rules cause BM told them its thier house and they dont have to. That is when I shut down and disengaged.
