small victory over dinner

For the last 2 years, SS10 has been gradually getting better about eating what we give him. However, he's still picky and doesn't like trying anything new. My DH and I love to cook, and love trying new and different things. My DD11 loves trying new things and is NOT picky at all, never has been. So earlier this week, I cooked dinner. SS10 sees me in the midst of it and asks, "What's for dinner?" so I tell him,"We're having X". Thinking that maybe I misunderstood his question, he then asks me, "What am I having for dinner?" to which I calmly reply, "X" I've been telling DH that SS10 needs to get over himself and eat what he's given whether he likes it or not. This is NOT a restaurant! DH agreed. When DH came home, SS10 asked him the same thing he asked me about dinner. We both told SS10 that there would be no separate or special meals prepared and that if he didn't like what was being served, he could make his own dinner! He actually did heat his chicken nuggets in the oven and prepared his own broccoli with NO assistance from DH or me. We just provided supervision and guidance on him setting the oven's temperature, having him read the instructions himself etc. I even guided him as he took the hot tray out of the oven with a large silicone oven mit (so no chance of him getting burned). I know it seems trivial, but in the past DH has always caved and prepped his special meal while SS10 sat around watching TV "waiting to be waited on". I'm glad to see those days coming to an end. Also glad that this didn't result in whining or a tantrum from SS10. He just did what he was told!

BioandStep:
I love your story! My 2 skids actually ate dinner last night too, and it had to be the most I have ever seen them eat. SS(12) is the pickiest eater I have ever met! He basically ate cheese, plain white bread, some candy, and regular Coke when I first met him four years ago. Last night I was in shock b/c he ate spaghetti. I can't believe yours made his own broccoli! Love that!

I like to make super fancy and delicious desserts that I know he is too picky to try, b/c he has a huge sweet tooth. It kills him, b/c everyone else is scarfing down cakes or sundaes, but he won't back down and try it. Last week, he caved and said he wanted his picture taken w/ a dessert I had made, but that he couldn't "risk trying it."

Stepson eats what we are eating or he don't eat. I don't take special requests. The only time we catered to him was when we made something we knew a head of time he said he didn't like , then we made him mac and cheese and a hot dog. Funny thing is he wanted what we had and actually liked it. I was raised you eat what's offered or you go hungry. Kitchen closed.
