Christmas & BM Nasty's traditions in MY home

Anywho78's picture

I’m getting tired of having to keep crap for BM Nasty for the Skids because she’s too crappy to do it herself.

I have managed to talk SO into boxing up varied items which have been passed down to the Skids (mainly SD7) from Nasty’s family. Items such as hand-made quilts, stuffed animals and blankets are now put up on the top shelf of the closet for “safe keeping” until they are out on their own. I’m just wondering when Nasty’s family’s traditions & heirlooms are going to find their way out my door.

Please note that we have these items because Nasty can’t be bothered to keep her own children’s keepsakes…she threw away both Skids baby books for crying out loud…who does that?? There are hardly any baby pics of SD but loads of SS…I find the whole thing a little weird, but oh well.

Nasty’s family has a tradition of getting children ornaments every year & when they move out, they take their ornaments with them…some kind of tie to their childhood or something like that. For 2 years, we had Nasty’s childhood ornaments…they weren’t put up but rather kept in the ornament box with SO’s collection. But, I know that the ornaments SHE grew up with were ANGELS…her mother picked them out for her & gave them to her each year. She whined & cried about not having her ornaments (when I say whined, I mean 2 year old who had their sucker stolen, WHINED!)...SO got smart & traded her ornaments for his USMC Blues uniform (which she had told him she would trash)...seemed fair enough.

She decided with her children to let them pick their own…the Skids ornaments include characters such as Scooby, Spiderman, Care bears (picked out by BM Nasty when Skids were babies), princesses, Dora, Sponge Bob, Barbie, and freaking Hello Kitty! SS9 has 8 ugly tacky ornaments while SD7 has somewhere in the neighborhood of 20+ because she picked ornament SETS (ALL of the princesses, FOUR care bears, etc).

For Christmas, I like traditional decorations around the house and on the tree. Many friends of mine have a second tree for kiddie decorations and silly stuff that doesn’t need to be in the living room. SO made “you just killed my puppy” faces at me when I suggested a second tree. I personally find it tacky and hideous.

SO seems to be coming around to the idea of traditional versus cartoon tacky & has planned on getting Skids traditional ornaments this year. I collect Frosty ornaments so he thought Angels for SD, Santa for him & Frosty or Rudolf for SS would work nicely. He promised to gradually remove the ugly ornaments (1 per year per kid) meaning that by time they graduate, I will no longer have Sponge Bob gracing my Christmas tree…hell, I figured that at least it’s a start, right?).

Stockings will be replaced when we have the money for it...at present, SS has Scooby (it's HUGE & makes horrid noises), SD has Hello Kitty (which she hates...Hello Kitty is her BM's thing, NOT hers!) & SO has a Cowboys Stocking. All of them have pearl names written with love by none other than Nasty...nice! SO knows that when I replace them, the new ones will be traditional (possibly knit) with embroidered names so they don't look like eye sores in my effing living room! I told him he could use his Cowyboys stocking for Fathers day...figured we'd start our own tradition...the SKids can fill it with stuff on Father's Day rather than having "Santa" do it for Christmas.

I completely agree with a second tree for their stuff. DD16 puts up her own tree in the family room that she decorates the way she likes.

I do the one new ornimate each year with all our l
kids always have. I do though have a special place for them and they will get them when they move out.

What I don't get is why bm doesn't want them in her house why let them be at ur house. I would never let someone take over one our traditions ever.

There is nothing wrong with u wanting what u want but there is nothing wrong with what she us doing either. I just can't figure out why they r at ur house.

Send them to Ger house and tell her that u thought she would want to keep them at her house and do that special tradition with them there as it us special for u and them.

The woman chooses to only see her children for less than one week per year...she hasn't had them for Christmas in four years.

If she couldn't be bothered to keep their baby books, why would she want their ornaments? I would LOVE to send them to her house, but alas, she'd only toss them & that would be unfair to the SKids.

I completely understand not wanting some other woman's crap all over your house.

I also buy each of my children and stepchildren an ornament each year that they will take when they leave home. They choose the ornaments, so there are some Dora, Coca Cola polar bear, some Pirates of the Caribbean...and Im proud to display them on my tree. My living room is my childrens' living room. My favorite ornaments are the ones they made out of dough and painted, or the Popsicle stick and yarn kites in holiday colors. My front room isn't for entertaining. It's for family. I would be much more embarassed for someone to enter my home and not be able to tell that children lived there than vice versa.

MY family tradition is to get each child a new pair of pajamas (with fluffy slippers) & an ornament...these are wrapped & the kids get to open them on Christmas Eve...they go put their new PJ's on & hang their ornament before bed...

MY family has never done the character ornaments (we grew up very religious where Jesus is the reason for the season)...I have grown away from the religious thing but can't come to terms with what Sponge Bob, Scooby or Dora has to do with Christmas...I have always preferred Santa (since leaving home), Rudolf & Frosty.

The Skids annually make ornaments which are for SO, so those are just part of having kids.

People know that children live here...it's just not as "in your face" as other people's homes & I like it that way. No embarrassment on my end Smile

Oh when I married DH I 'inherited' his Christmas ornaments he had bought over the years. Who has the freaking Death Star and a Klingon Warship on their Christmas Tree? Us obviously. Nothing says "Peace on earth' more than the Death Star.

But then he told me in a cleaning fit one day his ex threw out the Christmas stocking he had had since he was a child. I made a replacement one, he appreciated it immensely but still... it isn't the same.

I have a soft spot for items that are handed down. I have a cheap plastic reindeer my sister and I bought our parents when we were in elementary school. We paid 50c for that reindeer. And now it is thousands of miles form 'home' in another country. When I look at it I remember all those Christmases past.

Let the kids have their 'own trees' in their rooms. We can't take their memories away from them, certainly not at Chrismas no matter how slanted and off centere those memories are.

DHs ex has a delightful fold out tree with minimal fuss andbother that sits on a side table. She hates putting out decorations whereas DH would have our house done up like Griswolds Christmas meets Las Vegas Brothel. I am slowly getting things 'my' tasteful but personal way. Please someone, let the flashing wreath he puts up on the roof blow off and break this year. And the candy canes that line our drivway? What is wrong with luminaires?

But it is Christmas and having BMs crap in our living room ... well put it this way. When YSS wants to annoy me he tells me his mother is throwing out the 18 inch plaster cat she has and he wants to bring it over to MY place. FUGLY!

Her stuff stays at her place, our stuff in all its glorious craziness stays here.

Um NO. When BM wants to throw something out, SHE gets to be the bad guy. It should NOT be coming to your house. In fact, I would box up all her christmas kaka and send it to her house where she can observe her traditions as she pleases.

That's just poopie.

I pray every year that some kind soul will steal the illuminated animatronic cartoony nativity scene from our yard. I have moved it closer to the street on countless occasions hoping some needy person would just rip it from the extension cord and drive away....maybe this will be the year? I hear theft is up in these trying economic times.

Don't get me started on Christmas Yard crap....
As previously admitted, my DH is a Christmas junkie... emphasis on the word 'junk'.
His Jewish friend's late wife was Christian so he had a boatload of yard stuff over the years. In his infinite wisdom and while making things nice for his STB3rd wife he cleared everything out and offered it to my DH.

Dh comes home with this FUGLY flashing wreath and 2 plastic reindeer my 2 yr old GD called 'cows'. Not to mention various cheap arsed stuff circa 1973 that had half the bulbs missing. Jeez, sorry, has to go in the tras... what? You will find a couple of pieces that work out of all the crap? REALLY?

Not to mention the Death Star and Kingon ballteship decorations for the tree.

My brother and sisterin-law have this generic tree with matching decorations. We will have a real tree this year and an extra tree for the left over decorations. It may not match but the memories are far sweeter.

BTW the 'cows died' naturally under 6 ft of snow that accumulated over 2 blizzards. Their legs broke under the weight of the snow and like horses you put down a cow with broken legs don't you? Of course that was the Christmas Eve we had 9 people sleeping over due to the blizzard including my MIL who had the best advice.."As long as the Scotch lasts, I'm fine."
