OT - Turkey Tuesday

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Turkey... yay or nay? My DH is not a big fan of turkey (he prefers quail or pheasant) and would actually rather eat chicken! He does, however, luuuuuuuuurrrrvvv the smoked turkey my brother makes for Thanksgiving.

I DO like turkey, but I'm not cooking an entire turkey for me, myself, and I! When I'm craving turkey (sorry, formed bits and pieces of turkey thingies compressed into squares/rounds that are called 'lunch meat' do NOT make the grade), I buy a turkey breast and slice it into 'cutlets'. Then I rub them with olive oil, season with sea salt and freshly ground pepper, and cook them in a skillet.

I can take it or leave it, as long as I don't have to cook it.

DH would rather have duck.

My future BIL is smoking a turkey this year, and bringing it to my house (along with my sister, of course). I think it's his first time smoking a turkey, so we'll see!

DH does love to smoke giant turkey legs.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

The turkey my brother smokes is soooooooo juicy and tender! Juiciest turkey meat I've ever had. Hope your future BIL has success. Biggrin

Turkey is good... I super prefer ham or elk for thanksgiving though...

Smoked anything is delicious though, I haven't had a smoked turkey, but I could definitely get behind that.

I'm a Nahhhh.

I basically will take a slice of "show turkey" just to have it on my plate.. but I really just fill up on the dressing, gravy and other sides. There is always so much food it really doesn't matter.

Personally, I guess turkey is not my favorite because I like dark meat and it tends to get overcooked and tough and white can be dry especially when cooking such a large piece of meat.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

ESMOD, I typically eat a couple slices of turkey; a spoon of stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, broccoli-rice-cheese casserole; and a couple homemade rolls. Need some room for a slice of pie!!

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

I make this casserole with the potatoes and turkey and veggies and some cheese. Soup sounds delicious though! Creamy or broth base?

Dovina's picture

I have only done the broth base. But I love creamy soups, but have never tried that with left over Turkey. That probably would be tasty. Also casserole sounds yummy.

I had to look up what Tettrazini was. That also looks good. Again, your posts always makes me hungry Smile

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I will buy a single turkey breast once or twice a year and usually for myself. DH will eat it, but I'd rather keep it for myself and make things he enjoys.

I prefer smoked turkey and I also do not like "lunch meat" turkey. What the hell is that stuff anyway?

SO doesn't like the turkey unless its fried so thats how we do our turkeys.

This year we are doing Chinese Buffett. Its our every other year tradition Smile yummmmm dumplings!

thinkthrice's picture

Same here. Once you go fresh, brined and deep fried, you never go back!!!

nengooseus's picture

I'm really only in any of it for the leftover turkey sandwich. On white bread with mayo and cranberry sauce (from the can).

Although I'm in for Elk or Duck, for the record.

Even though we dont celebrate Thanksgiving, my mom makes the most divine turkey on Christmas day! I love the white meat with stuffing (sage, onion, spicy gingerbread! nom, nom!!!) and gravy. Drooling on my screen already!!

My preferred meal is the roast beef option at Christmas eve dinner, but I do love me some turkey the next day at lunch. (I love that we have both a Christmas eve dinner at 8pm before midnight mass at Christmas, and then a Christmas lunch. Both are full on formal dinners. My waistline complains by new year Wink from all the exercise my teeth do in that week.)

Dh doesn't like turkey, I do, but the dark meat. We really like the cornish hens, but they can be work too when you have to do so many.

We're just doing a ham this year. I MAY get a turkey breast and oven bag it.

Doing prime rib for Christmas I hope.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Mmmmm...Cornish hens. I have a recipe for Cornish hens stuffed with spinach/rice/shroom/sherry... I haven't made them in too long.

WalkOnBy's picture

I don't like turkey, but will take a piece and leave it on my plate so as not to offend whoever is hosting and made it.

This year, the skids are going to Medusa's dad's house for Thanksgiving, and DH and I will be at home all alone Smile

Since I am in the middle of an elimination diet, I will be roasting a chicken, making cauliflower stuffing and whipped sweet potatoes.

WalkOnBy's picture

what? when someone invites you into their home for a holiday dinner, are they not hosting? :?

WalkOnBy's picture

YUP! And DH told me this morning that the skids are actually going to Medusa's dad's TODAY so we have the whole house to ourselves tonight, tomorrow day and night and for most of the day on Friday!

Bow chicka wow wow!

LOVE Turkey. My DH is a breast man (of course he is Wink ) and I love the dark meat.

Ours is traditional meal With all the trimmings. We have invited guests. NO HOSTING HERE.

Doesn't "invited guests" sound more warm than HOSTING. Hosting sounds like such a chore. Sorry everyone I really have the rear about that buzz word that seems to be everywhere these days.

Turkey it is at Good Lucks home. Bravo to those who are eating wild game. I can 'do' Duck but that is it.

WalkOnBy's picture

meh - I think you do have the rear about that word.

When I hold an event, whether in my home or in a public place, I am the host. I extended the invitation, I am (typically) paying for said event, so I don't see anything wrong with the word.

I also haven't seen it everywhere these days, either.

Invited guests should be called guests, since they are guests. And the person who invites them is called the host.

momjeans's picture

I agree.

By definition, a host is “a person who receives or entertains other people as guests”.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I eat duck but am picky about it. Sooooo fatty and not good unless cooked right. And how the hell does someone cook duck 'til it's dried out?!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Well.... my 2 cents... invited guests, to me, means I'm hosting the shindig. :?

However, I have warm fuzzies about hosting. Biggrin

WalkOnBy's picture

right? I mean, "invited guests" describes the folks who are coming over. To me, the person to whose house they are coming is the host...

Doesn't seem that complicated, really...

I like turkey during the holidays. It's very rare that we have it any other time. Same with ham, though a couple of weeks ago we did buy and cook a ham and it was so good!

It's just DH and I (maybe my mom) for Thanksgiving so I am sure we will just go somewhere and grab a bite to eat. I appreciate the holiday but in some ways it's just another day for us.

--figureditout--'s picture

I love turkey, and leftover turkey casseroles and soups.

This year we are doing what we call Crackhead Thanksgiving. Whatever the kids want to eat, it'll be here. So far it's tacos for YBS and tortellini for OBS. I have recently given up all dairy due to some stomach issues, so there's no stress on me to make my creamed spinach. I may get a couple of steaks and have DH grill them.

Ooooh.....does anyone do the Peanuts Thanksgiving meal....popcorn, buttered toast, pretzel sticks and jellybeans? That is the major tradition here.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Crackhead Thanksgiving...LMAO!

momjeans's picture

I love, LOVE turkey.

Not a fan of cooking an entire turkey, so DH, a chef, will usually break down a turkey to roast, or we’ll buy a a few breasts to roast/pan fry. I do love leftovers, though, so I’m a fan of cooking a lot of it for turkey sandwiches, leftover thanksgiving “sushi” rolls (rice paper + leftovers, topped with gravy), or veggie, rice, turkey soup. I save the dark meat for soup!

DPW's picture

Nay.

I usually make a nut loaf, with homemade cranberry-orange sauce. All my non-veggie friends love it. Highly recommend!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Cranberry-orange sauce is delish!! I make a cranberry-orange cake at Christmas. Old family recipe. Mmmmm....
