I will read the first two sentences, then ask you a question  - despite the fact that the freaking answer is in the THIRD sentence. Obviously, he's a Non-Pop and needs his head dislodged from his backside. Farking icehole.

Where do you usually go for Thanksgiving?

My oldest brother’s house. He’s been hosting Thanksgiving for over 30 years.

Any tradition(s)?
We always watch football. The oldest person says grace.

Turkey or ham or ???
Turkey! We have ham at Christmas.

What's your favorite side dish?
As much as I like good mashed potatoes, Broccoli Cheese Casserole is the winner. Don’t forget the shrooms!

Food you avoid?
Green bean casserole (cue the barf emoji!)

Do you like pumpkin pie for dessert or something else?
Pumpkin, baby! With a big dollop of Cool Whip – the full-fat kind. One brother makes an AWESOME apple pie and I always have to have a sliver.

A favorite Thanksgiving memory?
When I was 11, we had a family reunion (Dad’s side) at my aunt’s (one of them) house on the lake. I remember going sauna and running back to the house ON TOP of the snow. There was so much that Fall, it was panked down good.

Worst Thanksgiving memory?
The year my sister brought her then-bf. The rest of the family was in the kitchen and dining room. I went back to the living room to get my glass of wine and he had her backed up into a corner, the front of her blouse gripped in his fist, and she was crying. I said, “HEY!”, grabbed him by the shoulder and pulled him back. He grabbed ME by the shirt, tearing it, hauled me to his face, and said, “Butt the f*ck out.” Oh, no, arsehole. Not with MY sister. I kneed him in the junk and, when he doubled over, kneed him in the jaw. My brother saw what happened, grabbed arsehole, by the shirt and back of his pants, and literally tossed him out into the snow, saying “Invitation REVOKED, f*ckface!” That little skeeze had the nerve to call the cops. By the time they arrived, the bruise on my sister’s face was making an appearance and I had a bruise on my chest where he’d grabbed me. Nothing like spending THANKSgiving talking to the police and sending someone to jail!

Where do you usually go for Thanksgiving?

- We now have my brother northeast who has a ginormous house and he enjoys hosting family (IE not traveling with 2 young chidlren), and my husbands  rather LARGE family. So its really a tossup and we take turns. Its a long drive to my brothers - 2.5 hours, so we stay overnight. My husbands family lives 20 mins away.

Any tradition(s)? New tradition

- since my husband is a sport fisherman, he will do fish fry. I like to do guacamole and chips.

Turkey or ham or ???

- Turkey, with gravy and mashed potatoes. No stuffing. Do not like stuffing.

What's your favorite side dish?

- shot of whiskey. JK. Mashed potatoes and gravy - my moms style which is giblets and mushrooms.

Food you avoid?

- Sugar.

Do you like pumpkin pie for dessert or something else?

- My mother makes an awesome pumkin pie with home made whipped cream and graham cracker crust. My niece-in-law likes to bake and makes these delish pineapple and coconut sugar cookies.

A favorite Thanksgiving memory?

- Each Thanksgiving seems the same, but this year I think will be the best, because this month we closed on our house and will be in OUR home. Prbably working on remodel projects. lol.

Worst Thanksgiving memory?

-  about 7 years ago I got the flu and couldnt eat anything. The good news is I lost weight, but...

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I would luuuuuuuuuuv fish at Thanksgiving! I'd be the only one, though.

You can send me some of your Mom's pie and whipped cream and a few of those cookies... Biggrin

Where do you usually go for Thanksgiving?  We normally alternated between grandparents growing up... Last year I hosted H's family and my sister and her hubby and furbaby... Year before I was with my family, year before that H's family...  Idk what will happen this year. LMAO

Any tradition(s)? Parkerhouse Rolls... I think that's really it for thanksgiving... we also always used the nice China... But... I don't have any nice china. LOL

Turkey or ham or ???  Both.  Ham is my favorite... But I did a really good brined turkey last year!!! (puts my turkey success rate at 100%, so I'm retiring now... lol)

What's your favorite side dish? Mashed potatoes or Jicama salad Smile

Food you avoid? Sweet Potatoe Casserole...

Do you like pumpkin pie for dessert or something else? Apple Pie!!!

A favorite Thanksgiving memory? Years ago, rented out a huge hall and had all the extended family there. It was nice to see everyone in one location Smile

Worst Thanksgiving memory? I dropped the mashed potato bowl on one of the SUPER NICE China plates.... I was fairly certain my mom was going to murder me

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Sweet Potato Casserole with marshmallow on top? I do NOT like marshmallows with my sweet taters. Blech! I found a recipe that is absolutely divinve - has a carmelized pecan topping One of my SILS - who does not like sweet potato casserole - ate 2 helpings!

This year for Thanksgiving we will be going to my brother's house since we usually do it at mine.
No real traditions for this day.
I prefer turkey, but everybody else in my family likes both.
My favorite side dish is the green beans with the crunchy onions, so simple yet I love it.
Side dish I avoid is usually the sweet potato souffle, it's good but too sweet for me.
I really enjoy pecan pie, but we never seem to have it.
When I was a kid, we had so much family here in town and we would all get together.
I would say worst for me was one year we had a family member running late and my mother went on a huge tangent about how rude it was and she was really bashing him. When he arrived we were all so uncomfortable because she acted like it was completely fine and we all sat there silent from her verbal lashing.

advice.only2's picture

Lol thanks, I admit I am the only one in my family who eats it so I make that dish just for myself, I don't know something about it.

Yeah I love pecan pie, but we usually only have apple and pumpkin.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I cannot stand green beans! Others in my family like it - and we have it - but I avoid it like the plague.

We have lemon meringue pie every year, but I never eat it.

I love This Holiday - I always take the entire week off!  No skids!  BM has them each Thanksgiving and we have them (well, YSD) each Xmas (which is NOT my favorite holiday)....

Where do you usually go for Thanksgiving?

Somewhere close, within about 100 miles of home, oustide the US so we can escape and have fun adult time!  This depends on finances tho and this year we'll be home the entire time.  Cooking a lot, sleeping in, going on long walks, etc.

Any tradition(s)?

ALONE TIME. One gourmet meal out if we are out of town, or we cook a huge fancy meal for ourselves. I make a fairly complicated dessert to follow.

Turkey or ham or ???

Depends on our mood - turkey is for Xmas so we don't have it.  DH and I are not big ham fans.

What's your favorite side dish?

Champagne

Food you avoid?

Anything with veggies and brown sugar combined.

Do you like pumpkin pie for dessert or something else?

While I love it, DH does not.  I usually make something we both like, but complex.  I made an incredible almond/lemon curd pastry one year.  I'll check out my dessert cookbooks ususally.

A favorite Thanksgiving memory?

My mother leaving a RAW TURKEY, unwrapped, sitting in the dishrack of the sink - amidst drying "clean" dishes.  Not sure how long it was there or why.  I freaked out on her about that one!

Worst Thanksgiving memory?

Travelling 8 or 10 hours (maybe it was 12...it was a blur) via Grayhound bus home during college (a normally 5 hour trip), almost getting left at a stop in the middle of nowhere because they ran out of seats (??? I was literally freaking out to the driver that it was a REST STOP and I was already on the bus how could they kick me off - where was my bag!), stayed exhausted at my family's home for ONE day.  Never did that again.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Nice  side dish, Cover!!!

Please name  one or three or ten of your complicated desserts!

Your mother. W.T.F.?!?!?!

Cover1W's picture

Ok, here's three, maybe not all that complicated, but if one thing is off, it's all over!

Almond cake ring with lemon curd filling - all from scratch, down to grinding almonds. It was decadant.  I accidentally dropped it on the counter after it cooled, but even lopsided it was amazing.

Lemon chiffon pie - was very hard actually, cooling/mixing was spot on.

Madiera cake with candied orange peel - holy moly this was one of my faves.  Served with Madiera wine.

Funny, all have a lemon base.

This year I'm looking at a walnut caramel tart- it's my neighbor's receipe.  The original uses pecan (not a pecan pie, slightly different) but she changed it to walnuts because the pecans were too sweet - this is the ultimate coffee dessert, my husband loves it.

OR I may do something entirely different.  I need to look at my cake book.

My mother is NOT the best cook on the planet.

Another year she bought one of those countertop turkey cookers.  This was the year I was in charge of the turkey making.  Um, ok...so my recipe did not work AT ALL.  I had that baby stuffed with bacon and butter and olive oil between the skin/meat and fresh herbs encrusted it.  That effing cooker STEAMED the turkey. It was awful - all my careful seasonings just...melted...off of it.  It was bland, tough and pale.  The gravy was good though.  She never used it again. I never found out why she wanted to use it and had never used it before (rule of thumb, new gadget use it before you have 12 people over for dinner).

Where do you usually go for Thanksgiving?

Visit family (mine and/or DH's) depending on plans. One year we didn't do any family and spent Thanksgiving at Disney.

Any tradition(s)?

Not really

Turkey or ham or ???

I'm a stickler for turkey but won't complain if we have ham.

What's your favorite side dish?

Hard to choose! Yum yum potatoes (it's a cheesy potato dish), sweet potato casserole

Food you avoid?

Grandma's cranberry salad

Do you like pumpkin pie for dessert or something else?

I also am a stickler for having pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving but will eat other desserts.

A favorite Thanksgiving memory?

 Nothing specific.

Worst Thanksgiving memory?

The year my grandparents thought it was a good idea to buy a turkey loaf instead of a real turkey. By the end of the meal everyone agree that the loaf would never happen again.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Does Grandma's cranberry salad have an objectionable ingredient or do you just not like it? Sounds ominous...

Trying to Stepmom's picture

It uses cranberries and oranges and some other stuff and then chopped in a food processor.

I have to admit that I would rather eat the jiggly stuff from a can, which is weird because my Grandmother has some amazing dishes.

I might be the only adult in my family that doesn't eat it.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

We have a family recipe for Cranberry Salad that has celery in it - and it's surprisingly good. People look at me like I have two heads, but I grew up on it and don't find it weird at all! lol

HowLongIsForever's picture

Late to the party but I'm going to play anyway.

Thanksgiving has evolved so much over the years for me.  It hasn't been a big holiday since we were little and a 50 some odd group of extended family gathered at my aunt's.

Where do you usually go for Thanksgiving?

It's a "home" holiday for us.  We aren't necessarily home but it is our household only rather than extended family.

Any tradition(s)?

Parade, football game.  Makes for a really long day.  Which means lazy day with a traditional Thanksgiving spread for Friday grazing.

Turkey or ham or ???

We do both (very small, 5-7lbs ea)

What's your favorite side dish?

Potatoes.  Cheese potatoes.  Mashed potatoes.  Whatever.

Food you avoid?

Green bean casserole.  I love green beans but I don't understand this dish.  At all.

Do you like pumpkin pie for dessert or something else?

We do pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake.  Depending on how good our orchard haul was we might have apple crumb, too.  Always home made whipped cream.

A favorite Thanksgiving memory?

We (almost 20 of us kids) got in a food fight at the kids table (relegated to the basement play area away from all the grown ups).  The commotion brought down a couple of uncles.  Who promptly joined in.  Chaos ensued and more adults joined.  Nonsense.

Worst Thanksgiving memory?

I don't really have one.  Aside from a few stand out moments over the years Thanksgiving is pretty tame and uneventful for us.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I do NOT like green beans, but also do not understand that casserole. Was someone trying to stretch the green beans??

Pumpkin cheesecake... nom nom nom! I'm in search of a good recipe. Do you have one?

Steppedonnomore's picture

Where do you usually go for Thanksgiving? I cook and the kids and grand-kids come to my house along with any friends who do not have a place to go.  Thanksgiving is for family and, if you can't be with yours, you can be with mine!

Any tradition(s)? My kids expect my sweet potato casserole (with pecan, brown sugar topping). And it has become a sort of funny traditiion that I nearly always forget to take the cranberry sauce out of the fridge.

Turkey or ham or ???  Both.

What's your favorite side dish? Dressing (we don't stuff our turkey, dressing is a side dish, cooked separately)

Food you avoid? Since I'm the cook, I don't make anything I don't like.  Smile

Do you like pumpkin pie for dessert or something else? I always make pumpkin and apple and, sometimes, pecan.

A favorite Thanksgiving memory? Every year spent with my maternal grandparents, mom, brothers, aunts, uncles and cousins! I miss those Thanksgivings!

Worst Thanksgiving memory? I don't really have one although the first Thanksgiving without my mom was a tough one.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

My sweet potato casserole has a pecan/brown sugar topping too. I wonder if we're making the same recipe? Biggrin
