Family gathering or a quiet day?
Family - close to 30 of us. NOT quiet! LOL

Do you have turkey? How is it prepared? If not turkey, what's your main course?
Turkey – roasted AND smoked

What are YOU making/buying for dinner?
I’m making pies this year. SIX of them!

Any family favorite dishes?
Homemade cranberry relish, that smoked turkey, homemade rolls, chocolate pie

Favorite kind of pie?
For Thanksgiving? Love that pumpkin! Otherwise, I prefer fruit pies – especially rhubarb!

Will you be watching football?
My Dad is an avid Lions fan and my brother luuuuuuvs the Cowboys (who play every Thanksgiving). It’s a family tradition to have football on all day long.

Do you plan to do any shopping on Black Friday?
Oh, HE!! NO!!! I detest crowds and there is nothing I want badly enough to tolerate that craziness.

I am writing from punta cana as we speak. I expect to be doing our annual 'avoid the family rockfish tournament' for thanksgiving... lol

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Family gathering or a quiet day?
Small family gathering - we are not too loud for Jersey standards LOL

Do you have turkey? How is it prepared? If not turkey, what's your main course?
Every other year we do Chinese Bufett.  The years we don't we have Fried turkery

What are YOU making/buying for dinner?
DH and I are going away this year.  Everyone is on their own

Any family favorite dishes?
Oma's brussel sprouts

Favorite kind of pie?
I love coconut and pecan.  The rest want pumpkin

Will you be watching football?
This year we will actually BE AT an NFL game!!

Do you plan to do any shopping on Black Friday?
Nope!! Never.  That is a special day for my mom and sister.  They can have it!

classyNJ's picture

Sweat bacon and onion in pan

Remove and add brussel sprouts that have been boiled and blanched

Cook for a few minutes until tender

Add back in bacon and onion, 1 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup sugar, a splash of white wine, tablespoon of capers and one or two tablespoons of flour.

Cook till bubbly and hot.

We don't have a recipe written down so we just go by the smell

Ok

Family gathering or a quiet day? Family, friends, friends-of-friends. The Thanksgiving rule at my house is everyone should be with family and if you can't be with your own, you are welcome to join ours.

Do you have turkey? How is it prepared? If not turkey, what's your main course?  Turkey and ham.  The turkey is rubbed with an herb butter (including under the skin) before roasting.

What are YOU making/buying for dinner? I ususally do it all.  This year my daughter is making a couple of the sides.

Any family favorite dishes?  Sweet potato casserole.  A friend gave me the recipe 40 years ago and I've been making it ever since.  Even when my kids were small and our family gathered at my grandparents' I was always asked to bring that casserole.

Favorite kind of pie? German Chocolate (like the cake but in pie form)

Will you be watching football? Perhaps.

Do you plan to do any shopping on Black Friday?  Nope. My Black Friday tradition involves attending an annual fundraiser for our local Childrens Hospital.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

May I ask what's in your casserole? I make one and like it better than plain ol' sweet potatoes.

Love your BF tradition!

What are YOU making/buying for dinner? I'm making baked mac & cheese, sage stuffing, and coquito (Puerto Rican Eggnog)

Any family favorite dishes? We love to have pasteles another Puerto Rican dish that's awesome

Favorite kind of pie? I love Sweet Potatoe Pie

Will you be watching football? Football is a must!!!

Do you plan to do any shopping on Black Friday? I like to shop online for Black Friday. I can't do the crazy long lines and the disrespectful people who lose their minds during this season.

Family Gathering (Regardless of how painful they can be... I'm dreading the in-laws and my neice and nephew. lol)

Yes to turkey. Normally roasted in a roaster. But my lack of one means we're going to try and cook it on the grill. We normally have Ham too (big group, gives options).

I'm going to make a white chocolate ganache pie, apple pie, homemade mac and cheese, I still haven't decided most of the rest... I keep trying to get DH to commit to something, but so far no go... So I'll probably just fake something.

Family favorite dishes...  SD5 wanted bologne... SD9 wanted JUST mac and cheese... So i'm going to go with no... LMAO. Back home we had potatoe salad every year. I may make some just so we don't have to have the yucky store bought kind my in-laws will probably bring...

APPLE PIE!!!

I've never watched... I used to go play flag football though with a big group of guys at like 6AM... It got intense. Idk if we have that here though. Or if I could find the stuff to run it myself (or the people... lol)

I'm going to go and buy ONE thing for black friday on Thursday night. A Nintendo switch. Because 1) I've kind of wanted one... 2) the kids will stay entertained for hours, giving me a bit of free time. Win-Win.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

PA, would you share your recipe for that pie? Nom nom nom...

I used to play TACKLE football. Gave that up after I was tackled by three 200+ pound guys and ended up with broken ribs. DAMM!T.

ProbablyAlreadyInsane's picture

I have it at home! If I can remember (I'm kind of ditzy lately) I'll send it your way or post it on here!!!

They won't let me play tackle... Actually they will, but anytime we play it's like they think I'll break and no one will go near me and it's stupid.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I was the only female playing tackle football with the guys. But I was also a hardcore jock!

Thanksgiving with my BFF’s family. She’s about to turn 93, but is still so much fun. There will be about 15 of us.   They will roast a turkey, and we will bring a roast pork loin.

My “secret” pecan pie recipe is the one off the Karo bottle- except that I use dark brown Karo and dark brown sugar is plus I use a lot more pecans.   I’ll also make my homemade rolls, fresh cranberry/orange salad, and the gravy.

We’ll watch the Saint’s game that night at home. My Black Friday shopping will be online.

My advice - save that turkey carcass and make turkey bone gumbo.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I love Karo! Confession: it's the only pancake syrup I'll eat. It's so thick and oozy...

I never understood people who threw away the turkey carcass (or chicken). Use it!!

I recently cooked a turkey breast in my pressure cooker as a dry run for Christmas. It turned out very moist - not dry at all.   I used the meat to make turkey/cranberry salad for sandwiches, turkey pot pie and turkey noodle soup. I tossed all the bones, skin and scraps plus some onions, celery, onions and peppercorns back in the pressure cooker to make the best stock.  I’ve already made the gravy with it and it’s frozen. It’s too frantic trying to make gravy after the turkey is done and you are trying to get everything on the table.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

My Mom always made turkey pot pie, turkey and rice soup, and turkey tetrazini. I miss time in the kitchen with her.

Any family favorite dishes?  Chestnut Dressing, Pumpkin Chiffon Pie

Family gathering or a quiet day?

Just me and DH.  We don't have any relatives close and the SDs are always with BM over the Holiday (they are with us until Wednesday morning though so DH has a solid week with them prior to them leaving which is good - but NO SD14 at all this year).  Then for Xmas he has them 10 days until the 26th/27th depending on when BM wants them back - and she has them over New Years too.  So actually it works out super well for us.

Do you have turkey? How is it prepared? If not turkey, what's your main course?

We have turkey on Xmas because SDs never get it on Thanksgiving - plus, I make a GREAT bird.  Convection Roast is my "secret" plus stuff it with lemons and lots of herbs.

But DH and I plan, when we don't travel anywhere - this year we are staying put, hotel rates are usually low this time of year actually, we make a gourmet meal just for ourselves.  This year will be either steak or italian - italian steak?

What are YOU making/buying for dinner?

DH and I go in on it together, but I'll make the dessert.

And I always buy champagne for fancy meals.

Any family favorite dishes?

My dad's clam dip which NO ONE else likes.

Favorite kind of pie?

Apple, but I don't make pie, I make some sort of complex dessert that takes a long time.  TBD.

Will you be watching football?

NO

Do you plan to do any shopping on Black Friday?

H*LL NO

Cover1W's picture

It involves two cans of clams, worchestershire, black pepper, paprika (I think), clam juice, lemon juice and two slabs of cream cheese.  Just mix it up until it tastes right, smooth and creamy with big clam chunks in each bite.  He makes his savoury, I would personally add tobasco.

Dad serves with potato chips, I like it with big Fritos!

OH:  DH updated me this morning.  We might go on a trip after all for a couple nights...he must have a paycheck.

Sounds yummy! I'd consider making it for Christmas, but the skids would probably poo-poo it. ~eyeroll~
