I think my thyroid is broken...
I've gained, seriously, like 35 lbs in 2 years...the last 15 here in the last MONTH!! I'm freaking out because I'm working out like a demon, not eating TOO badly, cut down on the booze, taking vitamins, I'm active, I ride my bike, etc.
I'm going to the doc. this week to see what my problem is; please everyone cross their fingers for me...this weight gain isn't right...I have a HOST of other symptoms that lead me to believe I have thyroid problems........I'm scared & stressed out & need some supports...
Thanks girls (& fellas)
xoxo
Fearless

ALways in my thoughts
and now I will add you to my prayers.... Honey, even if it your thyroid, it is nothing to be scared about. The same thing happened to my mom, but her was a dramatic weight loss. They discovered it was her thyroid and they put her on medication. It was a little annoying to find the exact dosage she needed, but when they hit the nail on the head, she felt better than she had in years, her weight leveled out and she has been fine for YEARS!!! I know it is scarey anytime we think something is wrong inside of us, but you will be just fine. It could also be the extra stress you have been through too. Stress mimics so many illnesses.
Keep me up on what the doctors find out. You have my private email and myspace so if you need anything let me know.

Mine too- thyroid(hypo) runs
Mine too- thyroid(hypo) runs in my family and thankfully all are able to gain control with medicine- love modern medicine. It still woild suck though and I am gonna be praying for you.
There is no reason where logic does not exist
I will be thinking of you
and saying some prayes for ya!
No, No, No
You have been through enough. You know what it is? Here is what we will pray and believe it is, muscle weight! Muscle weighs more than fat, so I will pray that is it. After all, if you are working out, then that has GOT to be it!
~IT WAS WORTH IT WHEN I BEGAN~
You know Fearless
maybe you were just too skinny! It ain't so bad onthe fluffy side.
"I didn't lose my mind, I sold it on ebay."
You are in my prayers. Make
You are in my prayers. Make sure they do all 7 tests if the first comes back negative. My friends came back negative four times but he knew it was her Thyroid. He said there were 7 tests and they finally got on back positive. She's doing great on her meds and lost 60 pounds in 8 months on the medicine.

*crosses fingers*
Good for you for going to the doctor. I hope they do some blood tests and find out what it is fast. I'll be praying for you!
*~So sayeth Nymh~*
You got it!
Have them check you for insulin resistance, too.

Thank you guys...
Thank you all so much, I appreciate...7 tests and insulin resistance...got it. I am literally hungry ALL the time, stressed out to the teeth, depressed, anxious, the whole gamut. I AM approaching 35 on top of it too, so we'll see. I shall keep all posted!!

Soon to be Fearless the Free!
My Mum
Has underactive thyroid since the day she was born. I do notice with her, that all her weight goes from her Chest to her Knees...skinny hands and skinny legs below the knee's..weird. She had been Over dosed on the meds for years, but since I have her new doctor looking out for her she had dropped the meds from 400mg a day to 150mg and feeling so much better. She has also been able to lose 10 to 15 kg with good eating and light excercise.
I have been tested but I am OK so far. Have the tests and you'll be fine, when they get the answer the meds will see you right
Eating tips if you are hungry all the time: have quick snacks ready in the fridge for picking..like fruit salad and if I have a sweet moment I eat jelly beans instead of chocolate and chips...Glucose are way better than heaped sugars and fatty choccy. For dips and biscuits I have reduced fat Philly cheese and rice crackers...still savoury goodies with less than half the fat
Good luck, Hope it all goes well for you.

My thoughts are with you..I lurk here everyday even though
I don't post much..It gives me comfort knowing you folks are here. I had (hyperthyroidism)graves disease and had my thyroid removed this last year. It was a difficult time and has taken a while to get my thyroid levels to normalize with Levothyroxine. For me, the surgery was the best course of action. I would do it over in a heart beat. I do however miss the weight loss with graves..I gained some weight after my surgery.
Your insulin resistance should get better after thyroid treatment. I got to go off metformin completely as my blood sugars are normal now.
I wish you the very best and hope you feel better soon!
Sincerely,
Nottheirmomma
A spotless house is the sign of a broken computer.
My thyroid is broken, too,
My thyroid is broken, too, but it's no big deal. Once they get things figured out and start you on the medication, you'll be good as new! Like the other poster said...make sure they test for the full Thyroid Panel, not just TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). T4 and T3 (free and regular) are vital.
Also, they may want you to have an ultrasound of the thyroid done, which is no big deal, just to make sure there are no nodules on it and to see how much enlargement there is (if any). I have a nodule. Again, no big deal, it's so tiny at this point they can't even biopsy it!
It may just be stress. If your thyroid is hypo. most times you don't have the energy to do everything you're saying you do.
I'm hyperthyroid
At first it wasn't too terrible- number one symptom is weight loss no matter what you eat! Whoooppeeee!
Then....all these years later, thyroid is still raging, but weight is NOT coming off. I guess it gets so whacky that symptoms don't make sense anymore.
I'm sorry to hear. BUT...hopefully it IS your thyroid and they can get you on some med to speed it up!

dont stress too much sweetie, I have a lady that works for me who has a broken thyroid, she is on meds and is fine!!

Diabetes
Yep, Anne is right. I had my throid tested about 10 times and they couldn't find anything wrong but I kept gaining weight. I was finally sent to an endocronologist and she found out I had Type 2 Diabetes. I will pray for you.

Diabetes or stress
is what I'm thinking. The hungry all the time thing could be Diabetes. Are you peeing a lot too?? Stress and anxiety can cause all kinds of things you would never guess. You've just had a major life change which would create a lot of stress even if it's for the better. Prayin' for ya.

I have gained...
literally, like five pounds in 2 days-the weight seems to be coming on faster and faster and I have cut my diet, like, in half! My only indulgence is ice cream and not a ton of it at that!...and it's all in my tummy area...my arms are toned and my middle looks like a ball. Plus I researched thyroid online & came up with this checklist:
You can use this checklist to bring to your doctor to help aid in getting a proper diagnosis of hypothyroidism, or as background information in your discussions regarding finetuning your dosage so you are at the optimal TSH level for your own level of wellness.

The thing that worries me the most is the weight gain (I will FORCE myself to work out because I'm so paranoid of packing the weight on), the exhaustion & the mood swings...some weeks are better than others, but I have been tired to the point I literally could not get up off the couch, like I was a week ago.
I dunno. I'm going to have them test my cortisol levels as well, I am a walking ball of stress (even when I have nothing to stress about!)
*sigh*
Thanks ladies. I hopes they can fix me!

Soon to be Fearless the Free!
I'm glad you're getting this checked out.
Good thoughts and prayers going your way.
Good karma thoughts!
Hey, Fearless, you are SO YOUNG!! By the wisdom (life experience!!)
of your blogs, I thought you were older!! I actually had the same
issue when I was your age, but then some of it turned out to be
hormonal. (It SUX having "women's issues"). I'm in my mid 40's now,
have grappled with hormonal things for several years, but I feel
great overall.
This TOO, shall pass for YOU. It'll all be straightened out. Hang in
there, stay POSITIVE, and keep us posted!!
Check your hormone levels too
You are younger than me but I was experiencing some of your same symptoms about 8 months ago. My problem is decreased hormone levels and I was anemic from irregular periods. I am not 40 yet but my Dr. said I am premenopausal, apparently early menopause runs in my family. Just a thought. Keep us posted, let us know what they say.

Now I'm freakin frusterated...
Well, damn.
All and I mean all my bloodwork came back normal.
This is a good thing, yes, but that doesn't explain the tiredness, the hungries, the irritability, etc!!!! So back to the drawing board in two weeks when I go back and see my doctor!
Thank you ladies for ALL your support, it means so much to me...they ran 10 tests, my cholesterol & LDL is beautiful, my tsh, t4free and t3 levels are all within the normal range (albeit to MY eye on the LOW side of normal but I'm no doctor)...everything else came back fine, so I dunno.
Wish me luck!!!!!!!!!!

u think its just stress?
i know i gain weight when im stressed...some people lose and soem gain...everyone handles it differently.
"Given the right reasons and the right two people, marriage is a wonderful way of experiencing your life."
~the late great George Carlin
Which was on the low side of normal? Tsh?
If your TSH comes back low it indicates HYPER thyroid, not hypo, so that would not explain weight gain. I had the same problem for several years, after each kid. And once again have had weight issues for a couple more after Anna. All the while I'm still hyperthyroid so should be losing easily.
It is definitely stress with me. Plus I was just diagnosed with ADD and put on a med for that (weightloss side effect yay!) I have lost 15 lbs, lost most of my cravings for carbs, and now seem to have FOCUSED energy throughout the day and the ability to follow through on tasks from beginning to end.
I think stress makes other issues (like my ADD, which I have managed my whole life with no meds) harder to cope with. I also think stress makes your body respond with a "flight or fight" instinct, which forces your body to hold onto every single pound it can. It is thinking "What's going on? Is there a war? Is there a famine coming? Homeostasis NOW! Do not let one single pound go! Crave Carbs to insure this body stays alive!"
Our bodies do not "know" that we are simply stress and that the crazy cravings and extra pounds are not helpful in alleviating that stress!
So...
Get ye to some yoga, belly dancing, some fun form of physical activity!!!!
I am starting Belly dancing and meditation next month.

Stress & Thyroid levels...
My levels were as follows........
Component Your Value Standard Range
TSH 1.37 0.4-4.00 uIU/mL
T4 FREE 0.90 0.70-1.48 ng/dL
T3 122 58-159 ng/dL
Can anyone decipher this one for me?? The T4free is the one I was most concerned about since it looks kinda low, but I'm no doctor.
Sita Tara, I am one walking stress ball. I do exercise, I mean FORCE myself to exercise daily...and I have been really trying to NOT stress myself out (but then I stress trying NOT to stress!! LOL!!)
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm interesting...the three thryoid tests they performed were just the TSH, T3 and T4Free. Are there any more I should ask for??
Maybe I should just ask them for a scrip for valium, huh??
Grrrrrrrrrrr

My T4 was .8 and I felt like
My T4 was .8 and I felt like death warmed over. Also, the range I have for Free T4 is actually (0.6 - 1.60) and I heard they were going to RAISE the bottom value to something like .9 . Every lab uses different ranges. To be feeling 1/2 way decent, I need to be in the 1.2's or so.
I thought that seemed a little low!!!
I will definitely raise that issue with my doctor when I go back!!!
Hopefully they will put me on some kind of medication!
So you think I'm on the low side even though it doesn't crack the standard??
________________________________________________________________
Soon to be Fearless the Free!
My understanding is
That if the TSH is low, but the T3/ T4 is ok, then your body is already adjusting the low TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone.) If your thyroid is over active (hyper) your brain will stop releasing TSH in an effort to return it to normal, that's why hyper is low tsh. If your TSH is High, then your thyroid is not functioning and your brain is releasing extra TSH to try to stimulate it.
I'll have to look up T3's and 4's again.

To me it sounds like stress
I went through the same things you did back in 2000. I was 32 at the time. I had everything checked. Thyroid, Lupus, Rhuematoid Arthritis panel, hormones, CBC twice, Lipids, you name it. One month I had a normal period and right the next week was passing blood clots the size of tennis balls. That is the only time that ever happened. It came down to stress. I'm not sure waht caused it exactly. The only thing I could come up with was that my mom had passed away at the age of 49 four years earlier and I had never come to terms with it. I did not have a good relationship with my husband at the time either. My stress levels have always been fairly high and I guess it finally caught up with me. My OB/GYN put me on Sarafem which is a brand name for Prozac. I had gotton so bad that I was awake for over a month straight with no sleep at ALL!!! I would lie on the couch and stare at the ceiling at night. I felt like I was going to die literally.
I say it's good ol stress.
