There are no positive role models out there for stepmoms. The closest you get to positive is Mrs Brady and Julia Roberts (Stepmom, ’98). But in both cases the BM is either dying, dead or out of the picture. I don’t think they count. I read in a stepparenting book that there are a couple of children’s stories where the stepmom is good. In all cases the BM is dead and the children choose which person is to be their stepmom, not the husband. We need a champion, an advocate, a public figure who is admired and is a stepmom. Has Oprah ever done a show on stepfamilies?
Regardless of your parental role in your stepchildren’s lives, we are expected to be a positive role model to these children. How can a person whose current role is vilified be a positive role model?

there is a good one in nanny
there is a good one in nanny mcphee at the end..
I loved it!
I loved Nanny McPhee...what a wonderful story!
Outside of that I cannot for the life of me think of any positive SM role models where the BM was still in the picture.
HMMMM My skids saw Nanny McPhee
and it had NO positive effect on them whatsoever. they still are boorish, rude and have no respect for me whatsoever!
Terrorize each nanny
In Nanny McPhee, don't the children try terrorize each Nanny until they quit? Is there a living breathing BM in this movie? Does the BM participate in the movie? Does the Dad parent his kids? And how does the SM fit into this picture? Does Dad meet her fall in love and bring her home? or do the kids somehow pick her out for Dad?
I realize this is entertainment, but I'm just curious what types of roles and situations are portrayed as stepfamilies in pop culture.
Speaking of nannies...
What about "The Nanny" with Fran Drescher and Shane from Days of Our Lives? Oh, wait... BM dead. But she did come back as a ghost to give her blessing.
There was the very shortlived "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" when the guy from "The West Wing" was going to be the father to Amanda Peet's baby, even though they never had sex. He would've been a stepfather, though, and the father wasn't in the picture. I guess that doesn't count, either.
Huh. There really don't seem to be very many positive stepmother role models out there. I guess WE'LL have to do it!

BM's in these movies are
BM's in these movies are portrayed as angels and martyrs cause they are all dead....
oh and in nanny mcphee the
oh and in nanny mcphee the kids did not want a SM because they believed that all SM were evil because of the story books.
I have actually thought of
I have actually thought of this before. I don't know of any sit-coms or dramas that have dealt with the step momma/daddy/sibling/extended family situations. Definately none where the BM and SM get along (although in Reba they almost get along... but SM is a dingbat). The closest I can think of is a british soap opera... eastenders... but they deal mostly with the step father issue of an infant... but we gotta start somewhere.
RE;
I loved that movie w/ Julia Roberts, "Step Mom". I used to own that movie, and I did watch it w/ my skids. They say I 'm alot like Julia in that movie...but I cook better
. I thought they were really on a roll with something....until the BM was going to die. I wish it could have been set up to where BM would still live, but need the aid of the family , and have to work out differences w/ Julia in order to raise the kids right.....we almost had it w/ that one. Maybe a show can be created based on that movie, with the BM living, and the family going thru the motions of blending.~ " I started out clean, now, I'm jaded"~ Rob Thomas, Matchbox 20
Reality TV....???
If Hollywood wants good reality TV they should follow some of us around for a while and get a real dose of REALITY! Only problem is they would most likely have to give it a "R" rating for all of the "R"ediculous, "R"age filled, "R"antings from the BMs!!!!
Don't make me get my flying monkeys!!!
Messy
Ha Ha. I thought about the Reality TV thing too. Wow that would get messy. I think more then step families would be glued to that show. I mean until you are in the situation, you have no idea the complexity and bizarre dynamics that take place. You could have a mother's day special two hour show -- run for cover.
