I think we all can agree that Ryan was a less-than-stellar father at times, but I agree with his comments. His kids are adults now and Tatum should stop blaming everyone else for her behavior and take a look at herself.
My grandparents didn't have the best childhoods. They grew up in the Depression. They both lost their moms (at ages 4 and 11, respectively). Never once did they pin their mistakes on anyone else. They took responsibility for themselves. A lot of us didn't have picture-perfect childhoods either but at some point it's best to work through that and take responsibility for one's own actions.

I couldn't agree more. That
I couldn't agree more. That Tatum is crazy.
LOL, same here. My childhood
LOL, same here. My childhood sucked and I was miserable until I was able to get out at 18. I may be terrified of commitment and prone to depression, but hey, at least I'm a self-sufficient, functioning adult who takes care of her own sh*t, instead of some useless, whining, entitled drain on society.
Wow. My mom and I were just
Wow. My mom and I were just talking about Farrah Faucets son yesterday.
What's up with these people. For some, it's like they're angry at their parents for raising them in privilege. whatever losers. Enjoy your miserable existence.
The freedom, the strength, the will to do as I damn well please.
Um, from what I know of this
Um, from what I know of this dude he has like, less than ZILCH room to talk about fatherhood or parenting. This guy is the poster child for horrible father. Seriously, he could write the book on what NOT to do to make your kids lives a miserable existence. Why this guy gets any credit on this subject is beyond me. What's next...referencing Michael Jackson on how to bond with children?
The freedom, the strength, the will to do as I damn well please.
Ummm, I am pretty sure that
Ummm, I am pretty sure that is what he is saying, that he was a terrible father. Are you reading something different?
Bricks and dogs and babies, Oh my!
Precisly. He's not fooling
Precisly.
He's not fooling anyone. He is a piece of shit and his children are a product of his shit. I'm not about to target his crap daughter or crap son when I know where the source of that shit stems from.
And I don't see his kids doing any of this desperate celebrity shit either. They're too busy hating their shit father for their shit upbringing.
The freedom, the strength, the will to do as I damn well please.
Oh, please. Every murderer
Oh, please.
Every murderer in prison uses that same "I had an unhappy childhood" excuse. I guess you have more sympathy for his crap kids because they are celebrities. The whole my parents suck so therefore I suck idea is nothing new.
And obviously you don't follow the headlines. Tatum was arrested AGAIN for drugs. I guess, at 49 years old, that is still daddy's fault.
Bricks and dogs and babies, Oh my!
"As far as I am concerned
"As far as I am concerned Anon, they are all seriously messed up in the head adults and don't deserve an ounce of consideration with the exception of a really good psychiatrist and/or drug counselor."
Well said!
Chapter 3, Ecclesiastes, vs. 1-8
I know, right? Excuses get
I know, right? Excuses get made all day long for every member of that family, EXCEPT Ryan. So typical of RA. He's the chump. All eyes on him and all fingers pointed at him. Oh, and at Farrah, when she was alive.
From People:
"Friends say there was a "Berlin Wall" between the parents—one was either in Ryan's camp or Joanna's, never both. What little order Tatum and Griffin knew came in the form of weekend outings with Ryan's parents, playwright Charles "Blackie" O'Neal, 79, and his wife, Patricia, 75, a former actress.
In December 1971, Joanna )HELLLOOOOOO, BM ALERT!!!) entered an L.A. hospital for drug treatment, and Tatum went to live with Ryan in Malibu. Griffin stayed with his mother until 1977, when, 12 years old and seeking what he called "a father figure," he joined Ryan and Tatum in Malibu.
They made an unusual triangle. Tatum had become an instant celebrity when she won an Oscar opposite Ryan in 1973's Paper Moon, and their relationship was not typically father-daughter. "She was his female companion, but in a very healthy way," (OH YEAH, HIS FEMALE COMPANION IN A HEALTHY WAY, WHAT A FREAKING JOKE! YOU MEAN A MINI-WIFE????? BET RYAN HAD NO IDEA THAT SHE WOULD NO LONGER CONSIDER HERSELF HIS DAUGHTER AND INSTEAD BE HIS SPOUSE) says Steve Jaffe, Ryan's former publicist.
"She was possessive of him and peculiarly protective in regard to other women around him." He, in turn, played equally possessive mentor and booster, despite their predilection for explosive screaming matches. Griffin, however, was at sea. As Tatum once told an interviewer, "Griffin's room is right opposite mine, and he's forever coming to me for things as though I'm Mommy. And, of course, I have to tell him to clean up his room and do small chores around the house. He hates that. 'Okay, Mother,' he'll shout. Which makes me very upset." One observer spoke of the "O'Neal dragon"—when two of the trio were quiet the third would inevitably be "blowing fire."
Ryan's other child, Patrick, now 15, his son by Leigh Taylor-Young before they separated in 1971, seemed relatively unfazed by the turmoil. "Patrick is very different from Griffin, very gentle," says their grandmother Patricia, a casually elegant woman who lives near Malibu in Pacific Palisades. "Tatum was the princess and Patrick was the baby. Griffin was in the middle. He felt like nothing. He would do anything to be like his father. When they walk down the street together, people think they are brothers. Griffin adores that."
Kelly Osbourne made some comments recently about how she went to school with Griffen and she put Ryan down as a loser of a father. Really? She ought to know about fathers who are losers. However, she was able to get off drugs herself and I don't hear her blaming her father. Odd that she'd sympathize with Griffen.
I don't see Ryan blaming anybody for his temper, escapades, shitty choices. Tatum would be putting needles in her arm while telling her children, who lived with asshole John McEnroe (who she claimed was abusive and that is not hard to imagine) because she picked drugs over them, that her drug addiction was her father's fault. Nice, in her show, her own son didn't want much to do with Ryan. She told Ryan it was because her son blamed Ryan for her heroine addiction. She is one of the worst parents I have ever heard of! She's every bit as messed up as Ryan... AND her own mother (who conveniently has skipped blame since she died, not surprising).

Tatum screwed her own kids
Tatum screwed her own kids too. She's been an adult for a very long time. Who does Ryan blame for all his screw ups? Tatum still blames him for all her faults as well.

Blech. I get entirely pissy
Blech. I get entirely pissy every time I hear some 50 year old ADULT whining about their crappy childhood. Get over yourself already. Stop pretending to be a damn victim to something that happened 50 years ago. Adults are the culmination of their lifes experiences. If we were all about what we were as kids or what happened to us as kids, we'd still be wearing diapers and drinking out of a bottle. Why aren't we doing those things? Because we've moved on and grown up, ferthelovah.
This is my all time favorite song. It's my anthem and I could have written it word for word. It's precisely how I feel.

My favorite line? "I'd like to find your inner child and kick it's little ass".
If it's important to you, you'll find a way. If it's not, you'll find an excuse.
Nobody can hurt me without my permission.

I love that song too! Sad
I love that song too!
Sad part is, besides the fact my SD's mother died, they had a dream life with their dad!
So many more have suffered so much more from abuse both sexually, physically, verbally, have poverty, have life threatening illnesses themselves, have alcoholic parents, psychotic family members, congenital illnesses with their children and somehow THEY seem to function as normal, decent human beings! My father and my mother were both good examples of this! Never once would you know they had horrible childhoods. They grew up and were fine, outstanding adults! I salute those who pull their boot straps and decide to live not pout!
I have a stepson who is a
I have a stepson who is a heroin addict. His father was always there for him and we made sacrifices for him for many years. SS22 pulls the BS he was abandoned - blah - blah - blah. SS acts like he was abandoned on a doorstep somewhere.
At some point you have to take responsibiltiy for you actions and stop blaming everyone around.

I have some sympathy for Ryan
I have some sympathy for Ryan and none really for Tatum, based on all I have read. I hate how they blame Ryan for all their problems, that is completely bullsh*t imo. Everyone wants to crucify him for every little word he says, my god, why??? typical blame daddy for everything!!
My dad was an alcoholic, I am not. Get your shit together and grow up!!!
My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.
