The Anatomy (and phases) of a Temper Tantrum

Optimistic Soon to Be Step Mom's picture

Below is an article and video which summarizes findings of scientists' study of the tantrum.

As it turns out, the child experience both ANGER and SADNESS at the same time, thus the volcanic eruption of a tantrum.

Thus, it's best to ignore the early stages of the tantrum when child is angry (only makes it worse if you intervene) and then comfort at the ending sad stage.

Stepparents will probably be like DUH we have been ignoring tantrums for years. But I see farrr to many bio parents, especially Dads, trying to yell or comfort the kid instead of ignoring. I think I just might show this to DH
