Today, I've spent the majority of my day cleaning out our guest room, which will soon be SD's room (assuming that we will get some visitation days. We are hopeful for at least a couple days per week.) I've moved all my sewing (I'm a quilter/fiber artist) 'studio' (table with sewing machine on it...and a few plastic bins with fabric, and boxes of 'stuff', ironing board, lights, table lamps, more boxes, yet more boxes...) out to our front room, and even had to move all the furniture (by myself) in that room to accommodate my table and 'stuff' (known as junk my DH). I'm so bummed, because I just loved going in there, closing the door (locking it when I really needed privacy), and just created things to my hearts content without any interruptions. Now, I'm smack dab in the middle of the room... but it's all for a worthy cause... hey, I can watch tv while doing it! (As long as no one changes the channel... *sigh*)
And to make matters worse, my DH has been sooo tired, grumpy and snappy that I just feel so neglected. Today was a better day than the last few days, so I feel better. He did give me a peck on my cheek on his own, but I still feel like he's emotionally unattached. And then I realized as I was moving all my stuff around and pulling the calendar off the wall that I hadn't changed... we have one month before the court hearing. In about two weeks, we will have mediation. So, the clock is ticking. The stress is rising. I better get busy on my projects and just bury my nose because it's going to be quite a roller coaster of emotions.
So, my next question... we want to make this room comfortable and girlie for SD, so that she feels welcome, sees that she has her very own room, etc etc. But I can't afford a whole lot right now. I plan to make a pretty pink quilt- we assume that's her favorite color, because that's all DH sees her dressed in, and the fact that I painted the room last summer a very very pale pink hue for myself when I moved in there- a very calming color. So, I don't know what else to do. I was sorta thinking maybe fairies would be a good theme, but I have a teddy bear collection already on the shelves. I have a Teddy Bear pattern for a quilt that is very cute. Think that would be nice instead? I just don't know what to do to make this room 'roomy' for a little girl.
My grandmother has a rocking chair for me that was my grandpa's. I never had the space to bring it over until now. So, I was thinking of sticking that in there. We are going to change out the double size bed for my old twin bed when I was little that has a very nice wood frame. Actually, I have 2 identical frames for twin beds- a set. I figured we would switch out the basic metal frame in SS's room and put the other in SD's room. I don't have a dresser for her, but I think I can get one pretty cheap to match a cabinet in there from Target or Wal-Mart. Is there anything else I might want to look at? Any suggestions?
I am so used to having a boy around that I don't know what little girls like anymore!
. I was such a tomboy growing up, so I was happy with GI Joe, and well... GI Joe like stuff.

Fairies are Great!
I think it's a wonderful idea-what you are doing for SD--and might I add I like the fairy idea better then the teddy bears(fairies seem a little more girly)However I'm a bit partial to the fairy myself. How old is your SD?
Flowers go with fairies--and if you look on line you kind find legends of the fairies and stuff like that--where they live, what they do etc. I looked it up with my BD and we had a good time with it.
However I would go with your instinct. Which do you think she will like more? -what better way to make her feel welcome then to put your time and effort into making a special place just for her.
Anyway I wish you the best of luck and hope that your SD loves her new room. Hang in there.

Before you go to too much trouble
Before you go to too much trouble redecorating the room with something she might not like, why don't you wait until the visitation is set and then the first time she comes over, you have a "room redecorating party" so that she can make it her own. I think that would be way more special for her.
For my SD, we let her pick her own paint color, area rug, paintings, lamps, etc and she just loved being a part of it. And honestly, she chose things that I never would've chosen, so I was glad we let her do it. I wouldn't have wanted her to hate what I picked out for her!
Present all those ideas to her and see if she'd like to do a fairy theme or teddy bears or the rocking horse, single bed(s) or double, a dresser or just the closet, etc, etc. Who knows, maybe she likes GI Joe too!
That's just it though...
we don't want her walking into a room that has nothing in it, empty, cold, and bare- not welcoming at all. I had that happen to me as a little girl staying with some relatives for the summer, and let me tell you, it was the coldest feeling, even though they meant well and told me that I could decorate it anyway I want, it just felt awful because I felt like they didn't put in any effort or want me there.
She's also too young (6) to really understand the decorate it yourself idea right now...she certainly will be able to, but at least to understand that we don't have a whole lot to decorate with, no repainting going on either. I don't want her thinking that this is going to be an overhaul going on, because we can't afford that. I just didn't want this room to be empty. I wanted her to see that, we put effort into it for her. We want her to be happy here. I plan to leave the walls blank so she can put her own pictures up.
I know she's not a tomboy at all. I do know she is very girlie. It's not like I'm going to do everything, I do plan on letting her do things herself, but I was looking for some ideas. Thanks, though.
