Just My Opinion

Ok, I know it isn't my job or anything to figure out what is wrong with my stepson's mother but I am so curious as to what drives her to do the things she does. For example, my stepson is made to change his underwear twice, daily. He has to brush his teeth sometimes, 4 or 5 times a day. He even has to take a shower twice a day he says.

Now, I know that my stepson's mother is depressed and she has admitted to having social anxiety because she won't go or do anything on her own. Except somehow she manages to go to her medical asst. school.

Anyway, someone suggested that the things that she makes my stepson do are ways for her to have more control over him. That sounds like it could be true. I am just wondering what others may think about this behavior.

If she needs help, I wish that she would get it.

Oh my!

This woman DOES have a problem. She seems to overly focus on cleanliness & not grades---rather bizarre if you ask me.

It isn't your job to find out about SS's mom, but it is in your best interest to find out why she behaves bizarrely because it AFFECTS YOUR LIFE.

Your husband should know if she's a tad touched?????

It sounds like she has

an anxiety disorder. Could be OCD or GAD - generalized anxiety disorder. Take it from someone who knows. Both myself and my DH have OCD.

OCD

Unfortunately, she is going to train them to become the same way. How strange.

I mean if my kids soiled their underwear (Ha! Talk about genetic influence! There's a term my grandma would have used!) I would have them change them. By just for the sake of changing them? And excessive tooth brushing could lead to wearing down their enamel.

Sounds like she's OCD to me. Did DH notice those types of behaviors when they were married?

I know it's not funny, but...

If he's ever in a car accident, at least he'll be wearing clean underwear! Eye-wink

I can't figure out why she is so concerned with his cleanliness and so unconcerned about his education. If this were OCD, wouldn't she be obsessing over his homework assignments, checking and double-checking to make sure he got his schoolwork done?

OCD

Manifests in different ways. My father gets obsessive about things that are contradictory at times. Like he can't stand mildew on anything and can smell it a mile away (in MY house). BUT he is a hoarder, and has two houses filled up to the ceiling in every room with things that obviously will be moldy from no air flow, especially in the basements. He is a garage sale addict and buys other peoples old books and magazines obsessively, and those things are full of allergens. So I think OCD symptoms just depend on the persons anxiety over different things. They don't always obsess about everything and are very ritualistic in order to relieve stress.

That's why it was my guess.

I have it too, along with ADD. I just started Adderall and have noticed some improvement with organization and less impulsiveness. All my father's siblings suffer with it but it manifests in different ways. My Aunt is a hoarder of all things, my uncle of money and my other uncle is a "collector" of old cars and Army vehicles. My father and my aunt are the oldest, and the two younger uncles at least have turned their hoarding issues into something more profitable (but they still have family problems due to the hoarding aspect of not want to share any of it.)

Anyway, I'm not a pro, but it does sound like if it's not OCD it's still ODD!

Sita Tara is right

You can never guess what OCD is about. In fact, for some people like me and DH, one day it can be over one thing and a week later it returns as something else. You just have to be on alert for it and recognize it is the disorder doing that stuff to you. For me, I have consistently been a cleaner. You could eat off my floors I swear. In my mind I think if the floor is clean I'm good to go. Of course I clean other things as well. I am an organizer and I sometimes will obsess over something (anything)in my mind. Thoughts seem to get stuck sometimes. I have been through the whole religious thing which is typical OCD thinking, the "I can't eat this because maybe someone poisoned it thing" to the point I weighed about 110 pounds, I will repeatedly ask my kids if they did this or that, sometimes check the stove and other outlets to make sure they're ok. My yard is spotless mostly because of DH as well as the garden. This is the dumbest disorder I have ever seen. It's a constant battle. Thank God for Prozac.
